2010 TL Tech Battery Replacement

Ever since I bought this car, I have always had battery problems. I have replaced the OEM battery twice in 6 years. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good aftermarket battery with better CCAs that will have an OEM fit. I am currently considering an Interstate Mega-Tron Plus MTP-24F but I'm not sure if it would fit with all the covers and plastics in the hood. Has anyone had experience with this battery? Any other recommendations?

Thanks,

JPunisher

Acura OEM batteries are known to last 3 to 3-1/2 years, Mine died right around 3-1/2 years without warning. It’s was starting and running fine all day, and then my son went to start it that night and it’s dead. I pulled the battery but sine it was after 8:30PM only an Advanced Auto was open, so I purchased one of their Optima Hi Performance battery’s with 720cca and all has been well since. And I remember having the battery loaded tested a couple of months earlier, and it was strong so go figure.

That was the second time an Acura battery crapped out on me without warning. The first time was when we had our 2005 MDX and right over the 3 year mark the battery dies while my wife is getting gas.. Drove it all day, she stops for gas and the MDX is dead. Roadside asst came and jumped it and that is when I first learned from service to have the Honda / Acura batteries checked right around the 3 year mark.

in Hot ass Houston, Texas...I can only get 3 years from aftermarket batteries.
so, in that sense...replacing 2 batteries in 6 years isnt bad at all. as that's the Norm here

Our '12 SH-AWD Tech had issues with the OEM battery whenever the temps dropped too low, as the tight threshold that the tech system required in regards to measured voltage kept tossing errors when my wife left it at her work during the day. So I made a decision early on to not muck with the dealer replacing it with the same battery under warranty. Instead I opted for a NAPA replacement battery (can't remember the model name) that had significantly more CCA's. That was 3 years ago and to this day the replacement battery measures high in CCA's (dealer's tool they use for general battery health) and hasn't had a lick of problems. Cost after core swap was like $110- well worth every penny.

At least in your case you got some type of warning that something was going on.. In my case both times they never hard cranked or did I get warning lights.. Nothing... The vehicles drove fine, turned them off and then they wouldn't start..

Buy an AGM battery! These hold up to the elements much better and usually batteries last twice as long! Plus you can deep cycle them and not have to worry about having a battery that can be only charged again to 50% max.

Best way to save money is buy online (google the coupons for 35% off from pepboys, autozone, etc) and do free pickup in store.

I'm happy with 3-4 years from a battery. I wouldn't be confident with an older battery- especially in the winter.

If AGM batteries last twice as long as manufacturer claims why don't they give twice the warranty period?

Sure looks like it.. If it's not original, it's still a Honda OEM battery.

Most battery companies do 24-36 months of free replacement, and then remaining months are prorated based on what you paid for the battery. Bosch AGM that I suggested gives 48 months free replacement warranty and then another 3 years of pro-rated.

It's still not twice as long. At twice the cost and only slightly better warranty the AGM is not as cost effective as a standard lead-acid battery. I can buy 2 lead-acid batteries with full replacement warranty over a 6 year period for the same cost as 1 AGM with a 4 year full replacement warranty.

The Bosch AGM are on sale online at Pep Boys for about $143.99 for the 4G-TL Now they might be worth buying. I have no experience with AGM and don't know if they are good batteries.

My battery went out last week and bought the Bosch AGM battery group 24 at Pepboys and it cost me $119.08. But you have to buy the battery terminal protector and battery grease to get the additional $20 off, btw my OEM battery lasted 3yrs.

Understandable, the AGM battery in my 760 lasted 8 yrs before needing replacement (100K miles) and it needed to deliver close to 1000 CCA to start the V12. AGM by it's nature can be discharged and recharged much more often without an ill effects unlike lead acid, and are less sensitive to temperature fluctuations. They however do not like to be charged quickly and can be rendered useless with the wrong type of battery charger (the wall ones).

Plus you don't have to worry about needing a jump, being late for work, etc.

Make sure it has an AGM setting or will automatically know if it's an AGM battery and charge at a lower voltage.

I like this one from Canadian Tire but it's expensive.

If you are having persistent battery problems then you should check the ground strap to the battery (-ve) terminal and the grounds from the engine and transmission to the frame.
Sometimes these straps (cables) will be badly corroded but visually they look OK. Many expensive repairs have been done to vehicles over the years when the real problem was a lack of proper grounding.

New here with my '10 TL. I had this exact issue with my 2000 eclipse. Many issues were solved with a new battery ground, despite it looking perfectly fine visually.
