2010 Purchases - SH-AWD or save some money?

ok, almost ready to pull the trigger on a 4th Gen 2010 TL. Now the question is, will i get the SH-AWD or just save some money. Yes, I know, it is something great to have but the higher end model is ridiculously expensive here. Can anyone comment on the pros and cons of SH-AWD? I would love to have it when it snows (the few times a year here) but also for rain driving. Any comments?

Where is this "here"?

If you can swing it, get the SH-AWD. But, you could do without it. The SH-AWD is actually a luxury, not a necessity.

Personally, I was waiting for the combination of a six speed manual and SH-AWD in a Honda or Acura sedan. It was that specific technology that made me go out and look at the TL when I did, and I avoided even looking at the 2009 models because this combination was not available.

SH-AWD is a unique and very special thing, a generation ahead of what anybody else is offering. Personally, I would want it, for a variety of reasons related to both all weather capability and the ability to do more, faster, in dry weather.

But...that's just me.

We can tell you what we think, but you're the only one who really knows his priorities. :-)

I frankly wouldn't buy the car without SH-AWD. I'd buy a G37 over the FWD version. The SH-AWD makes all the difference to me.

I agree with all the posts thus far.

Where is "here?" I purposely bought the SH-AWD for the all weather traction of snow, rain, slush; if it wasn't for the need of AWD, I would have kept my 1G TSX.

SH-AWD's extra performance is very nice and fun to have

I also specifically wanted 6spd manual AND all wheel drive. Your choices become very limited with that combo. 6MT w/SH-AWD puts the TL in the upper echelon of the sports sedan category.

The AWD TL is more about the ride and handling than the AWD in snow. I found the base TL to be unacceptable for me, I owudl have easily been in a G37 if the AWD TL were not avilable. The AWD TL ride is liek a drug addiction for me. Also the nicer leather and more bolstered seats sealed the deal. Yes I hate the price point of the AWD and it was just outside my budget, but I made the exception. I can't say I will make the same decision when my lease is up becasue I expect by then a Type-S will exist and the natural price increases will clearly put the 2010 out of my reach. But I can say the base TL is not an option for me. Did not like the ride or handling.

for me it was all about the handling - drive both cars and decide for yourself

AWD cars always feel heavier to drive. They are in fact heavier in weight anyway. I just wanted AWD and that was what made my decision.
The G37 is a much bumpier ride with the AWD IMO.

SH-AWD is the shiznit. If you are going to buy the TL, buy the SH-AWD. Many people forget that this tech is NOT just for winter, it is for dry weather performance. Its advantages are....

1. NO, I repeat, NO torque steer (at least in my RL)
2. You can do crazy, high-speed stuff with SH-AWD in the twisties that you can't with FWD (or even with RWD)...especially with stickier rubber
3. Yes, you do get a little extra protection in inclement weather

Bottom line: Do eet.

If it weren't SH-AWD, I'd say save the money and spend a bit on dedicated summer/winter tires.

But since it is SH-AWD, get it and enjoy it.

bought the SH-AWD 6MT because it's safer on the curves...
specially in snow or wet surfaces.

Here in the south the main reason for the AWD was handling, but it has come in useful with our unusual snow and ice the last few days. There were surely spots I never woudl have navigated or slide out in a RWD car, and iffy in a FWD. The AWD sure does give you a very confident drive in bad traction driving.

Perfomance and FWD don't mix. It is performance and RWD, followed by AWD. If the TL, did not come in the SH-AWD I wouldn't have bought the car.
