2009 Acura TL vs. Hyundai Genesis
Folks, just wondering if any of the current 4th gen owners tried out the Hyundai Genesis..? I personally haven't checked out the Genesis yet, but they sure make very cool TV ads!

Just posted about this.... I took one out for a half day or so, and it really doesn't even compare to the 3rd gen TL. It's an interesting idea which I consider to be poorly executed. It drives okay but is decidedly not sporty. It shifts awkwardly. The dashboard looks and feels cheap. The stereo sounds okay, but is very difficult to tweak. The overall blue glow on the dash and the radio display looks like it was pulled straight from a Elantra.
I'm big on interior fitments, and the Hyundai doesn't feel as nice as the '04 TL that I turned around and drove home in.
I'm all for new ideas and good values, but the Genesis feels like a car that has been built to maximize profit margins rather than compete with the big boys.

I went with a friend to check it out last week. I didn't drive it but I thought it looked well designed in/out. I didn't like the use of leather on the dash. It comes fully loaded for 40K I understand a dealer in Waldorf, MD is adding a 4K mark-up, wow!? My friend wasn't impressed, said something seemed cheap. (I didn't)
It is about the same size as a BMW 535, too large for me. I wasn't impressed with the dealership though. It was not well kept at all and the salesman was wearing an old pair of jeans and a tee shirt. He could hardly be bothered with getting the key and didn't say much of anything. I kept thinking if this is how the salesperson acts, the sloppy appearance of the showroom, what would the service department be like? For those reasons alone I wouldn't buy it.

You know, I have to agree. As cool as the TV ads look, it is still a Hyundai That makes it really hard to get past. Part of a luxury car is the fit and finish which you just don't find in some of those Korean lines and such models like a Saturn for instance. I have a GMC Sierra and I have to say, they did a lot of refinement to the interior of the truck on the new bodystyle, but it sure as hell doesn't make me feel like my old TL did...even with leather, heated seats, Navi, BOSE, and all the other Denali upgrades. A luxury car is a luxury car...and Hyundai just insn't one of these auto manufacturers.

I've got a female friend seriously considering a Genesis. In fact, we just got back from test driving the new TL. I loved it, though she thought it was a little too sporty for her.
She thinks the Genesis is more luxurious. She's a bit turned-off by the fake aluminum trim in the TL. One thing that would kill a Genesis for her though, is that the V-6's with an black interior have a swath of brown vinyl across the dash. Supposedly the V-8's don't, but none of the area dealers have a V-8, and Hyundai customer service can't confirm.
Personally, the choice is a no brainer, but it's not my $40k being plunked down. Don't worry, I'm "lobbying" for the TL.

I wouldn't even consider the Genesis. Those who shop in the entry level luxury want a car that's more sporty. The luxury buyers like the 5 series crowd will snub the car. I just don't see it being viable. Hyundai needs to make a separate legitimate luxury line or else the Genesis will be competing for value buyers who may have purchased an Avalon, Lincoln, and other bland large sedans. If it's relegated to that it will lose due to price. The Veracruz (SUV) and Azera (sedan), Hyundai's more "upscale" and pricey models just don't sell well compared to competitors several thousands more, like the Pilot or Camry.

I have checked out a loaded V6 Genesis twice now, 2 test drives. Overall I am extremely impressed. I found build quality (assembly, fit and finish) to be better than the 3G TL. The materials are good and have a very upscale look and feel. The sound system is killer and the interior cabin is whisper quiet. You don't even hear outside noise until you get over 20 MPH. The ride is clsoer to a Lexus than the TL, it handles good, but the ride is more for comfort than sport. I love the exterior styling, far more than the 4G TL. The biggest problme of course is the badge, it is a Hyundai, and not to say that Hyundai has not come a long way, but part of buying a near luxury car is the way you are treated post sale, good service, free loaner, etc. Also I am concerned about resale, Hyundai improves every year and I supect in 5 years they should be on par with some of their cars to the other asian imports, but until then, I am not sure. If they offered a sport suspension that handled closer to the TL I would be in one, but I am so spoiled with my 08 Type-S that it is hard to find anything in the price range that rides and handles so well and my Type-S.

The cost of starting up luxury brand woudl force their price higher, they are gambling on the value oriented buyer. I think they will find many won't look past the badge, I agree they shoudl have started a brand and eaten the costs the first 5 years and they would be sitting well. They Lexus/Infiniti way worked.

1) Anyone who starts a 09 TL vs XXXX Thread should be subjected to a 3 day temp ban
2) All the noobs who pop in and make idiotic replies such as "uh, its hydunai, eww" should be subjected to a 2 temp ban...and should ONLY allowed to post in the TL forum for life.

What kind of people lurk in the TL forums these days - the degenerates of the world apparently. I honestly never knew there were Acura snobs until now. BTW, the TL isn't even in the same category of the TL. More like the RL you tards. And I agree on every point that Sarlacc made
