Your Opinion of the 2022 MDX

I thought I'd start a thread for personal impressions of the 2022 MDX from in-person encounters. Share what you like, what you don't like and please be specific in your review (but we don't need a novel). You can copy and paste the header info into your response.

Where did you encounter the 2022 MDX? A local SoCal dealer (2)
Have you driven it yet? No, just a walk-around and interior sit
Have you owned an MDX before? Yes, see below
Do you plan on buying or leasing a 2022 MDX (if so, which model)? Yes, probably a Tech SH-AWD

I've owned each of the MDX generations: 2006 MDX Navi, 2010 ZDX Advance (basically a fastback MDX), a 2016 MDX Tech SH-AWD and currently a 2018 MDX Tech SH-AWD.

My initial thoughts are that I'm a bit underwhelmed. The "flagship" and "best MDX ever!" marketing had my hopes high as far as design/presentation and specifications. I like that they're using the 10-speed automatic (I hate the 9-speed), but after 20 years, I would expect more than the enhanced tried-and-true 3.5L V6. The hybrid is gone and we're left hoping the Type-S's 3.0L turbo-V6 makes a difference. I haven't driven the vehicle so additional opinions will come later.

The exterior design is attractive, but evolutionary. Ironically for me, it actually looks better in pictures. In person, I focus immediately on the plastic black trim that dominates the lower part of the body and around the wheel arches. That is on the Tech. The A-Spec looks somewhat better because the black trim looks more integrated with the other black accents. I was disappointed to see that the Advance still carries the plastic black trim (unlike years past). For the Acura "flagship", the exterior doesn't scream "luxury" and just blends in with Mazda CX-9s, Highlanders, Explorers, or even the 2021 Kia Sorrento (I read Kia used the MDX as a benchmark). One "pro" is that the wheels have a more aggressive offset and don't "tuck in" like years past. The stance of the vehicle is better as a result.

The interior is noticeably improved. The vehicle was not "on" so I couldn't engage it, but the layout and design are a step above past-gens. The panoramic roof (finally) is a nice feature and adds an open-air feeling that has been lacking in past-gens. We want the espresso/brown interior, but the interior we were in was black. Nothing special color-wise; I think Acura could really explore more color combinations (even Lincoln now has beautiful interior colors). I think it's ridiculous espresso is only available on black, white, or dark grey exteriors (red or blue exterior would look great as well), but overall, I think the interior is the largest jump with regard to luxury. Speaking of colors, at least in SoCal, dealers really only order black, white, and grey models. Drab. We were really disappointed Acura dropped the brown exterior option. Acura could really set itself apart by offering more engaging colors.

More impressions to come as more come on dealer lots and we get to test drive. My wife is an MDX lifer, so we'll certainly be getting one at some point, but I'll be looking to put some aftermarket wheels and personal touches to make it less "meh" and more "hell yeah".

Your thoughts?

I agree with the Mazda comparisons, which screams premium at best and def not luxury. I do see Kia/Hyundai/Mazda as worthy rivals....that don’t cost 60k!
