Deciding Between Q60 and MDX

I just joined this evening after searching for forum on Acura.

I'd be interested in your thoughts on this. I've driven both and can't say this is much of difference in one drive. I'm partial to the MDX in light of the mileage, ease to move the second row seats and the compartments in the rear. Another question for you: Leasing? I'm told so 70% lease the MDX, is that reality? I drive about 17K a year but that will decline in the coming years, so a 15K lease appears to right for me.

Your thoughts

depends on what you want in the car. looks, space, ergonomics, performance...AWD vs FWD, tech stuff....

i personally don't like the exterior of the QX60 (former JX35)...the bass mouth grill and the bloated whale look doesn't quite do it for me (this is completely subjective, obviously). The interior lay out is nice though. on paper it's a little underpowered and heavy compared to the MDX.

i'm a bit biased to the MDX since i know what the MDX is capable of.

I was in the same situation last year before I decided to go with the MDX.

We test drove the MDX, Pilot, Pathfinder and JX35/QX60, in that order.

The QX/JX has more driver assist tech than the MDX, like the backup collision warning, and the around view monitor. The MDX Tech Package is more expensive by a couple of thousand compared with the JX with the Driver Assist and Premium Package. The around view monitor in the JX is pretty much useless at night with it's crappy resolution. The QX offers panoramic sunroof. The QX exhibits a loud engine noise when you push the pedal hard to accelerate, but it seems slow. All that noise for a slow acceleration... Although, the selling point for the QX is it drives smooth on paved roads. It's like a minivan and you can access the third row without removing the car seat. The QX60 is a fine 3 row SUV for the family but if you want something that you'll enjoy driving, then the MDX is one of the best out there without breaking the bank.

After I've seen the video posted above (when I was still undecided), I pretty much got sold on the MDX. The video shows how stable the MDX handles on emergency maneuvers. The QX looked like it would roll over when you make a really quick sharp turn. Also, the MDX has the SH-AWD available, one of the best AWD in the market. I got the SH-AWD Tech Package, even though I live in SoCal where it is sunny most of the year. Some say it's just a waste of money getting the AWD in SoCal, but I'd rather have it just in case I need it. Although, some swore that the FWD MDX handles really well too.

For me, if you want to get the QX, I would rather get the platinum Pathfinder instead of the QX60 and save the difference. They are pretty much the same. The Pathfinder's interior is fine too, but not QX fine. The seating for all rows are the same. The engine and transmission are the same.

The Pilot is ok too, but is really underpowered at 250 hp. The interior is really looking outdated (I heard the 2015 Pilot is going to be a redesign). And it's hard to get to the 3rd seats. Although, for me, the 3rd row in the Pilot is the roomiest.

If you are not in a hurry, I suggest you wait for the 2015 redesigned Pilot, I heard it will be on the same platform of the 2014 MDX. Maybe the Pilot will be more bang for the buck. But if you are already sold with the MDX, you can't go wrong with it. It is important that you do an intensive test drive. If you can, ask the dealer if you can take it home for a few days to have a good evaluation. Pay attention if the car has noises that are being reported here. Also, make sure that you get the latest build, there are some issue with the navigation on the earlier builds.

That's about it... I spent a long time comparing these vehicles as I want to make sure that I don't have any buyer's remorse. And after 5 months, I still look forward to driving it, especially on long drives, it is really fun to drive.

So there is a Q60 and a QX60 in the new Infiniti nomenclature? One a coupe and another a 3 row crossover? Talk about confusing!

I test drove the Qx before i purchased the mdx. Interior is really nice/clean. Love the moon roof. Power wise there was a noticeable difference in power when stepping on the gas. You can feel the weight on the Qx. Optional accessories were lacking, and swayed my decision a little. Exterior appearance seemed "mini van"ish and also moved me away. My wife loved it, however i was so so.

Thank you all for your comments. I favor the MDX over the Q60 and will likely buy that. BTW when I drove the Lexus RX350, I found the depth of the seats to be much shorter than either the MDX or Q60. I moved on after a test drive.

I asked once before, did any of you consider leasing? I strongly considering it in light of Acura lease plan which forgives 7,500 miles.

From a performance standpoint, the MDX is head and shoulders above the QX60. Add in Acura's high resale value, and it actually holds strong value year after year vs. the Infiniti.

The QX in comparison drives like a larger, heavier, softer and sloppier minivan, and the droning CVT does not help matters.

In the 2 years the QX has been on the market (previously as the JX) we have had several come in on potential trade for MDX's due to being dissatisfied with the performance and feel, and power train problems. As a lower cost alternative, we have probably seen double the number of 2013+ Pathfinders also come in looking to trade for the same reason.

Nice space, but soft dynamics, a less than impressive power train, and generally low resale value have not helped the JX/QX60 or Pathfinder.

Drove it vs. the MDX, and unless the extra bit of space is a must have, the difference in performance is clear right away.

I'm a huge infiniti fan and the qx60 is cavernous inside but I prefer the MDX.

Test drove the Qx60 as well as the MDX. Picked up the MDX yesterday night. Similar in price. The driving dynamics of the MDX trounces the Infiniti. Both have nice interiors (Infiniti might be nicer). Felt more comfortable in the MDX.

I think almost everyone probably had to consider it during their purchase. Consumer reports gives them both simliar scores. In the end I think for me it was drive of the MDX which was more sporty vs the more soft ride of the QX60. The QX had better techonology IMO and a hybrid option. But I went the cheap route and wanted to stay in the low 40s so I chose a base AWD MDX.
