I Might Be Back
I have been out of this forum for awhile and came back recently to check out info for the new 2022 MDX. It's sad to say but I will be away for a little while and may come back in a few years. Toyotas and Hondas have been in our stable for many years as commuter cars. We owned a 2004 MDX and a 2014 MDX Advance. Recently I started looking at another SUV since life is getting back to normal (as COVID is winding down in my opinion) and we are looking for road trips again. The MDX AWD with the technology package is on my radar with a sticker of about $55575. I have seen posts here that at best we are looking at about $2500-$3000 off. That means it's going to cost roughly $58,000 (OTD) including tax/fees/license in SoCal. Last weekend, I couldn't pass up on an offer from a local Toyota dealer for a 2021 Highlander Limited AWD for $44,000 (OTD) including tax/fees/license. I checked the resale value for a 3-year old MDX tech package and Highlander Limited and they go for about the same. In the end, I made the decision with the wife's approval and bought the Highlander instead even though my initial intention was to buy a new 2020 or (preferably) 2022 MDX. Maybe in a few years and there are no issues with the 2022, I might sell the Highlander and pick up a used MDX.
I think most folks would have come to these forums and posted a thread to discuss pros and cons of a Highlander vs MDX....before committing to one.
Also, if you are that unsure of your decision, you should have rolled that negotiated purchase price as the basis of a 3 year lease:
1) Which lowers your monthly payment while you check out the merits of the Highlander
2) Gives you the option to buy out the Highlander if you like it and/or the '22 MDX turns out to have more issues than anticipated
