Winter tires - General Altimax vs Continental ExtremeWinterContact
Hi - new member here. Just purchased an 08 TL-S that came with a set of Pilot Alpin PA3 winter performance tires
Excellent tire - unfortunately I need a more aggressive tread to get us to our cottage, which is 13 km down a back-country road and 100m up a sloping laneway!
Has anyone had tried both the General Altimax Arctic and Continental ExtremeWinterContact ($20 more per tire) and can offer an opinion/comparison? They seem to be both rated very well and competitively priced.
Thanks!

What way did you end up going on the tires, I am in need of some good winter tires as the state of Utah has decided that a good place to cut back is not plowing the roads!

I just put an order in for the Generals - pretty much everything I read about them was favourable (for a non-performance tire) and they are some of the most affordable.
Getting them mounted on some MSW rims on sale at Tirerack for $102

I have the Generals and they're good. I got them in the stock size and grip well in the snow that we've had here. Hard packed and up to 5" is all that I've driven on with them. You can certainly feel how soft the sidewalls are when on the highway but I think that's typical of snow tires.

I bumped it up to 43psi and it helped a little but snow tires are soft. I ended up backing off and run them at 38psi because I don't want uneven wear and it didn't help that much. After driving for a while you get used to the feel but they're still soft.

FYI - just posted the used PA3 Pilot Alpins for sale on the Black Market forum (pick up only in Ottawa).
Got the new Generals on today - should be able to test them tomorrow when we get some more snow. So far, I can definately feel the sharp handling of the PA3 is now gone ....but only a few more months till the summer tires will come on
