Tire Size Issue

Hey guys ordering new tires on tire rack sometime today but it shows to dif. tire sizes for the 06 TL auto tranny. First one it gives me is 245/45-17 and the second is 235/40-18. Whats the deal there? Which one do I need? Im sitting on stock 06 5 spoke rims.

You sure it says 245/45-17 and not 235/45-17?

Should show 235/45-17 as OE size, but I suggest replacement tire size 245/45-17

It says 235/45-17 and 235/40-18 when I go to the Tire Rack site.

The stock '06 5-spokes are 17" and use the 235/45-17; the A-Spec wheels are 18" and use 235/40-18 tires.

The '07+ Type-S has stock 17" wheels with 235/45-17 tires as well.

Well, you are 110% wrong. It shows 235/45-17 or 235/40-18.

Have you even thought about looking in your owner's manual or reading the tire placard on your door jamb?

^ Have you even thought about not being condescending?

Crestwood- if you're sitting on the stockies and want to go with the OE tire size then you need 235/45-17. That's the definitive answer.

That's not correct. Ever check the speedometer for accuacy? It's slightly fast with the OE size tires, so give it a try with the 245/45-17 and you'll be amazed how accurate it becomes. Believe me, put a 245/45-17 on there and you'll never use another 17" size.

Here's something else to keep in mind. The OE Michelin HX MXM4 is large for a 235 tire. The fact is that they come in at 25.6" diameter, almost the same diameter as the 245/45-17 tires, e.g. Yoko S.4 245/45-17 -25.7" Using this as an example, going with a generic, other than OE tire, and staying with a 235/45-17, your speedometer will increase as they are only 25.3/25.5" in diameter. Actually with all this doubletalk, we're only speaking of <1 mph difference at 60.

Sometimes I think this is calibrated this way on purpose... Take my Pontiac for example... The speedometer in the dash also always reads slightly fast... Usually 2-3mph... However, the head-up display is always spot-on with my actual speed. (Verified when I got clocked with LIDAR )

Im having new tires mounted on friday morning. My mechanic who my family has been using for 15 plus years suggested a certain Firestone tire. Not sure which ones but thats what im getting, he said they will wear better and last longer than what iv got now.

Firestone? I don't believe that Firestone even makes a UHP A/S tire, in fact their tires are classified only high performance. Should listen to the recommendations from the Forum, digest, then make your decision. You've asked a lot of questions so it will be interesting to see what the "old" mechanic comes up with.

Crestwood, I understand you wanting to "keep it in the family", but Turbonut knows his stuff when it comes to this kind of thing.

Is dad paying for it? If so, just suggest to him that fellow owners of the car recommend a certain tire and size for you to use. If he doesn't want to hear you out, don't sweat it you're getting new tires regardless.

Smart move! You might even print off some tired sizing threads from Acurazine to show your family mechanic plus your father. If he's not well versed with Acura (and just suggests Firestone because he likes them alot), this is a point well debating with your Dad and your mechanic.

If they are the 960's, that's even worse IMHO. Guess you can't please everybody. Just go ahead and get them, at least they are new tires. Maybe the next set you'll be able to negotiate more.

Yeah, I second that (960 pole position AS). They were good for the first 10K, no complaints....Then, noisy as hell! Only lasted another 10K. (Well, they still had about 5K left on them, but I couldn't stand the noise anymore and ditched them).

However, free is free. And I do like free, even if it means not getting my first choice

Ok just got it back. They are Bridgestone Fuzion Hri tires. I looked them up and they seem to be a good tire as long as you keep them rotated. I only put about 4 miles on them on the way home but I def noticed that they are alot smoother then the stock tires. Idk if you guys know what I mean by that but there is def. a difference. Im gonna put a few hundred miles on them before I try cornering it hard and ill see how they feel. My trip from PA to CT this monday should take care of that for me lol

Sorry to say, Dad better find another mechanic. They are only an H rated tire and the standrd tire is W rated. It's not that you can't use them, but they are a waste of money, once again IMHO, if you're looking for something with performance.
Does the mechanic even know what the TL has as standard equipment? I realize it wasn't your call, but the guy is simply not the sharpest tack in the box.

Thanks for at least posting the tires that were installed.

I never said I was looking for performance... I wanted an all season that will get better wear than what was on it. Thats what he made the decision based on. Not performance. Remember im 18 and I cant afford to be buying summer tires and winter tires.

Don't trip too much dude. You'll be fine on your trip to CT. Turbo's just saying there are better choices out there for your car and the mechanic may not be aware of that..

I really didn't mean to offend anyone, but do some research over on the Tire Rack Tech Center and become more familiar with the tire terminologies etc.
http://www.tirerack.com/about/techcenter.jsp

In certain applications I've even recommended an H rated tire for the TL, for someone that wants a soft ride with somewhat reduced handling, however these H rated Michelins run about $170 each..

An UHP (Ultra High Performance) All Season (A/S) tire can be had with a better wear rating than the Fuzion tires that were installed. That Fuzion tire carries a 400 wear rating, but there are 12 UHP A/S tires that have the same and higher wear rating, along with a higher speed rating, however you're not going to get these tires for $90 each. I've always said, you usually get what you pay for, more money, better tire.

You're young, but will learn quickly. Good luck with the tires.

Yea I dont really know my tires that well. But so far they are great compaired to the stock tires. Quieter to. And with the other ones I always had a weird noise in the back that got louder with speed, kinda like a whoop whoop whoop that would speed up. And now its gone

Crestwood, don't stress out too much. They actually have pretty favorable reviews on tirerack.com, including good reviews from TL owners. I must admit I was surprised at the positive reviews. Most people seem to really like those tires and several have commented how they are "a great bang for the buck". Also, a UTQG of 400 isn't bad, about average. I'm sure they'll be fine and you'll probably be very happy with them. Enjoy!
