Tire question

Hi guys,
I hate to ask since there are alot of other tire questions already, but my A-Spec rims are coming on wed and I am having a hard time deciding on the right tire. I went on Tirerack and narrowed it down to the Avon Tech M550 A/S.
I called my local tire warehouse and was told that the Toyo Proxes SZ4 are better than the Avon Techs. He said that the Avons have a very bumpy ride because it is a bit stiff.
I went back to tirerack to check out the ratings on the Toyo, but guess what? The tirerack doesn't carry Toyos!
I want good handling and a nice ride (not bumpy). Also, I don't want to pay more than $150 per tire as well. Can someone that have experience with one or both of these tires give me some input?

Thanks
Tony

Tony: I have Yokohama AVSdb2's that I use in the summer, but they are listed as an all-season tire, and I also got them from the Tirerack. They ride very nice compared to my Michelin Pilot sport A/S I use in the winter. I have the Moda R6's with 245-40-18 and the salesman said I should get at least 30K out of them if I rotate them properly and keep them inflated to factory specs.Cost was about $175.

If you plan to keep you old 17" wheels why get all-season tires? I don't understand why people do this?

I want something that handles well in the rain as well. I may not keep the 17's. I don't have to worry about snow anymore because I'll be moving, but just want comfortable and great handling tires.

Tom,
I appreciate the info. However, I found a great deal on the internet for Toyo Proxes 4 for around $155 with free shipping. I think I'll try those out.

i've had the toyo proxes 4 on a previous car and i was not impressed. i would get toyo T1-R it's a quieter tire than its older brother the toyo T1-S because the treads do not go all the way to the edge.

the internet is your friend...use this...i hope it helps makes your decision making easier.

thanks for article, but the TR1's are a bit more than what I'd like to spend.

Who said summer rubber is bad in the rain? That is not true.

Revolution and Hitec,

What do you guys recommend for a summertire that handles well and gives a comfortable ride? I'd like to keep it around $150.
The only problem I have with summer tires are that they wear too quick. I've never had summer tires, but by reading the review on tirerack.com, they seem to wear down around 10 to 15K. If this is the case, I'd rather sacrafice a bit of performance for longivity. I don't want to buy new tires every 6 to 8 months.

thanks
Tony

I love the Goodyear F1 GS-D3. I had them on my previous Audi's and I loved them (as did a lot of the Audi crowd). This crowd tends to lean towards the cheaper Asian tires, not sure why or if it's about the price.

You hit the nail on the head with the biggest drawback to high perf summer only tires. That is the longitivity. The rubber compound is much software and wears much faster. I think you would be pushing if you got 20k miles, but 15k would be normal. That is the biggest drawback of high perf summer only tires imo.

Tony,

the things you ask for are impossible... summer tire + good handling = okay. but + comfortable ride + around $150 i don't think are possible. might look at like 160-180 a tire. i dunno.....toyo proxes 4? those are pretty cheap and they're decent. continential conti 2 i heard are good from that article? beats me...i know when i get 19s for my car i'm going Toyo T1-R

I think there is a recall to fix the abnormal rear tire wear.

Just to let you know, I'm running Yokohama ES100 summer tire and I'll tell you they suck in the rain. I love them for summer, I just take it easy for winter. Mine did wear out fast! Only like 8000 miles. But I stuck with them since there pretty good, there around 150-180 I believe.

I've had the Avons on my car for 2 weeks now and they are a great tire and great value. My tire shop recommended the Pirelli's, but said he would definitely do Avons also. He isn't an Avon dealer, so I ordered them from Tirerack and he put them on. He said he wishes he was an Avon dealer. No noise at all at this point.
