Tire Pressure

Hello All:

Have been reading this board for about a year now and recently picked up my 2005 Anthracite Navi Automatic (Micheline tires). Love the car but thought the ride was a bit harsh but tolerable. This morning I decided to check the cold [factory] tire pressure. I was surprised to find it at 39 PSI. Recommended pressure is 32 PSI. Lowered the pressure to 36 and the car rides much better. Might eventually try 34 PSI.

The question is what pressures are most folks using?

By the way, FWIW with only 400 miles on the car, I have had none of the issues several folks have noted, i.e., not vibrations, butt prints or (thank goodness) no rattles. There was a slight vibrations at the noted 50-55 MPH when I first took it out on the highway, but that quickly went away and has not come back (perhaps flat spot?).

My only other complaint is range; this car definately needs a larger gas tank. Brighter trunk light would be nice also.

I have an '04 manual with Nav and the EL42s. I use 34 front and 32 rear.

I use 37F, 33R. Seems to be a good balance between ride and handling. I always boost the front about 10% over the rear on a front wheel drive car.

If you go to a shop and borrow a pressure guage from every tech working there, I'll bet you get a different reading on every one. Buy a good quality guage. I only use a Snap-On air chuck/guage that my shop foreman has.

Bob-a temporary flat spot is quite likely, especially if the car sat on the lot for any length of time.

if you think the ride is harsh now, stay away from suspension mods (aftermarket shocks, springs, wheels, etc.)

and, BTW, all Acuras are shipped with 60 PSI or more, to keep the tires from flat-spotting. The pressure adjustment is a part of the TQI (also known as PDI, or pre-delivery inspection.)

Because they can be unreliable. Spend some money on a decent one & you'll be ok. a $2 Pep Boys special is useless. That's why I only use the Snap-On one my shop foreman uses. In fact, all of my techs have them.

I agree with Bluenote, you need a good quality tire pressure gauge, and you have to spend some $ on it, not the $2 version.

I have read in consumer reports (if you believe them) that the digitals are more accurate than the mechanicals and more durable (as they are not effected by drops in accuracy readings).

I have both a digital and mechanical (both good bucks), they read 2psi different (even after calibrating the digital for current temperature, which the mechanical does not have). I sent the mechanical back for calibration (it had lifetime calibration with it, and warranty), they said it was fine, so who knows.

Also, a little known fact is that every tire changes pressure based on the temperature it is outside by 1 PSI per 10 degree change in outside temps.

Now remember, this is all with tires COLD (not driven more than 1/4 mile in the last 5 hours or so).

If the tire pressure was measured in summer at 80 degrees at 32PSI, then in winter the same tire (not accounting for normal small amount of air leakage of a tire) will be 28PSI if the temperature is 40 degrees (40 degree change = 4PSI change).

Conversely, if set in the winter, at 32PSI at 40F, it will be 36PSI at 80F.

Also, if you measure it in your garage, take into account the temperature of your garage vs. outside (could be significantly different!).

Now do you know why the FED required tire pressure monitors on all cars in the near future?

Hope this was helpful.
