I have an 04 with about 27k on it I just had brakes inspected amoung otherthing on my car but there was a couple of times when I could hear my brakes about how long do the oem brakes last? or is there even a way to guesstimate based solely on miles

It depends on the kind of driving you do. Someone who drives mostly in the city will probably need brakes sooner than someone who puts on mostly highway miles.

They are pretty easy to check, just by looking through the end of the caliper and observing how much pad is left on the brakes.
