Smile Thoughts on Suspension....springs vs. coilovers

I Just bought a 2007 TL Base and am ready to do some upgrades. I have been around slammed cars for a while and am ready to lower mine. I want to lower it at least an inch but im not sure if i want to go more than two yet. The car is my daily and i already scrape the downtown Dallas streets. My plan is to lower it and get wheels for now. Hellaflush is sick but i dont think i wanna get too aggressive right away. I do want a good ride still, stiff and better performance. Thoughts on lowering springs vs. Coilovers? Pics would also help. Thanks!

For your preferences, I would recommend coilovers. TEIN SA coilovers are one of the best on the market, as they give the ability to adjust the height and dampening (stiff/soft) to your liking. Refer to any other coilover thread and they'll mention the same thing. Springs is a fixed height, while coilovers lets you adjust.

Sometimes in life, you get what you pay for...

Italiano- Bro your TL looks Legit! Maybe i should just slam it now! HA This is very helpful yours, i appreciate it. What size wheel/tire combo are you running? Any recommendations on camber kits and wheel sizes/ offsets without rolling the fenders. Prob 18, been looking at some tsw as ive had luck wuth them before.

Here's my advice. Spend the extra money and replace the whole control arm with the camber adjustments intact. I went cheap and used the ones that replace the upper control arm bushings. They work and do the job but certainly aren't confidence inspiring. Plus they're a bitch to adjust correctly. I wouldn't recommend then unless you are very good friends with your alignment guy. If not, spend more and buy the upper control arm w/ the camber adjustments intact. Skunk2 makes one, not sure who else.

There are a hundred threads with this exact topic and not only do they continue popping up they don't mention one of the big advantages of some of the better coilovers and how they can give a better ride with more travel if you shop wisely. Otherwise the TL comes with "coilovers" from the factory and the cheap "coilovers" only offer adjustability.

TEIN or XLR8 ISC coilovers are what we recommend. Shoot us a PM with what you're looking for in a suspension and we can help you choose the right one.

From what i've read after all the hype about Tein SA, i think i may just go with them. Front/Rear camber kit and now for the wheels.... this should be interesting. Im gonna have to dig around and find some threads to find the right tire/wheel combo. I know i wanna go 18" maybe 18X9 20mm offset? Does this sound about right? Its gotta be flush

Find a wheel that you like and see what widths and offsets they offer. it gonna be harder to find the other way around cuz some wheels only come in certain offsets and widths. Wouldnt want to spend money on a wheel you dont like just because it matches the specs you desire. you can always get spacers. thats just my opinion.

thanks!

I agree with Zach, unless you get custom made wheels you're stuck with certain offsets.

I'm at 18x9 +30 and my front is very flush with the fender, the rear could use a 5mm spacer though.

Ive heard 18x9 a bit on some threads but i am not too sure what alot of 3G TL's are running. Offsets are not something ive messed with in the past so its gonna be a bit of a challenge. Whats the max spacer you can run before you need extended lugs? Who sells them? Best lugs/spacers if needed

I want to say after 10mm you will need extended lugs, or they sell spacers which you bolt onto your hub, then your wheel bolts to the spacer.

Akata and Ichiba are 2 companies I hear good things about.

When I was younger, I started doing springs first with my accord then moved to coils and what a world of difference they make. Dont make the mistake of buying springs. Coils the first time around and you will save yourself the headache and money for when you buy coils the 2nd time around.

I think 80% of people who start with springs would say if they had to do it again they would do coilovers. Trust me on this.

Thanks guys, yeah im gonna get the coilovers. Probably go Tein SA, rear ingalls camber kit and skunk2 front camber kit. Looking at XXR wheels now but i have no clue what to get yet. I like the XXR 530 and 526. Gonna do a full TYPE S A-SPEC lip kit. Xlr8 quad exhaust and j-pipe. AEM CAI, maybe window visors and some performance stuff under the hood after i do my 100k service. God thus is gonna put a dent in my wallet! Oh well

^ lol. SLAMMED TL!

Show your individualism by getting coilovers and tucking tire like everyone else! To complete the transition to worthlessness, make that bitch RHD, too!
