Tein SS or Megans??
Hey guys I just picked up a 08 TL and I'm wanting to drop it and was wondering what your thoughts and opinions were on which would be a better " Tein SS or Megans" way to go for the money, ride and performance? Also what did you pay for your set up and the best places to get a good deal. Thanks for any input!!!!

If cost is not a factor, most people will agree that the Tein SS is the favored setup for our cars. You should try searching for further info...this is a pretty common question.

IMO TEIN SS are superior in every way to the Megan coilovers. Megan's quality has never been what TEIN's quality is. TEIN's are more suited towards a balance of comfort and performance, at least the Basics and SS. Megan Racing coilovers are firmer.

The Megans are better for low price, maximum lowering, firm ride. Top mounts included so install is easy.
The Tein SS are better for a good drop for most people, excellent ride refinement and longevity. Have to transfer top hats from stock shocks, so install is a little more involved.
The HT-Spec dampers try to split the difference...lower price than SS, better ride than Megans, can go as low as you want, simple to install because they come with upper mounts...

i just bought my set of megas, if u plan on slamming really low its your best bet because u need to ride firm to avoid rubbing
as for the teins, best ride youll get but wont go low, and it doesnt have spring pre load option like HT and Megan have.
HT Spec does sound like the best of both worlds, but 900 is too rich for my blood, talk to the right people and u can get a set of megans for 785!!!

Then megAns are the best bang for the buck since it's 32 way dampen adjustable u can make it ride smooth but honestly not as smooth as tein megAns tend to ride a little stiffer but if u ride a type s it's not a problem cause type s are in general a stiff suspension

i roll with megans i have mine set firm because im pretty low i like the way they ride feels sporty i wasnt expecting plush like a caddy when lowering my car 2"+
Megans you can basically set the car on the ground and they still have room to go lower

I had Tein SS on 06 TL and now I have Tein CST on my RL.
I lowered about 1.5" on my TL all around and the ride was comfortable. I was running 18 inch wheels and then upgraded to 19 inch. Ride on the 18s was very comfortable where as the 19s was a little bit stiffer. I usually do some spirited driving on tight and winding turns and handles extremely well. It really depend on your style of driving. I like my suspension stiff and hard, kind of like Bilstein HD.

I'm planning on getting the coilover upgrade as well. Anyone who's got the Tien SS, what settings are you running? I'm planning on doing ~1.5 inch drop with 18's. Is it possible to set it so that it still rides like the Type-S suspension or better? I feel that the Type-S suspension tends to cope badly with the small bumps and seems to throw the whole car around on the big ones. Kinda hoping that the Tien's will make it a smoother ride but still keep the sporty pedigree .

+1 ... Aint that the truth....Someone above mentioned you wont get a caddy ride when lowering...Thats not true one bit...The HT specs are primo. I never rode on teins, but I do have so HT specs and that is a caddy quality lowered ride!

Yea it really is as close to stock as you can get. Type-s rides rough stock so the ride is damn near the same. I'm gonna soften up the dampers some, I'm Rockin 14 in the front and 16 in the rear...I'm gonna put it to 10 front and 12 rear. That should be the exact ride I desire.
don't get me wrong tho.. the htspecs are dope.. Marcus is legit

I'm pretty sure you've seen how low my car is, not sure how low I dropped it but I think its more than 2" I daily drive that all through 626 and through the freeways. I scrape and rub going up and down driveways and rub once in a while when making right turns that have a little dip in them. A lot of the scrapping and rubbing could be avoided, but I'm still new to the lowered car so haven't mastered the whole technique yet.

Not yet, but I'll try to shoot some pictures tonight or tomorrow. I actually like them a lot. I have it on 15 clicks from soft and its pretty firm but not overdoing it.I feel the difference but others that have ridden in my car say that they don't even notice the difference. When I first installed it, I put it on full soft. That was probably softer than stock but it feels really nasty cause its very floaty. If you are looking for a stock feel I'm pretty sure that can be achieved with the right damping setting.

That's it...that is what is involved with tophat reuse. Not a biggy in my book.

so if you want want to install 20" rims for the summer and want to close the gap but not enough to rub and still be comfortable, which one would be better Tein SS, Megans, HT Specs, H&Rs or K-Sports?

Well said and having had Megan's on my RSX and now Tein SS on my TL...I will NEVER go back (unless it's for a track only car). The TL rides absolutely smooth for as low as I have it set.
I will define this "install is a little more involved": you'll need to rent a spring compressor for free (if you've ever done just springs you know how this works) and only need to compress to remove stock tophat, the SS will be low enough to just put on there...and 1 friggin bolt. That's it...that is what is involved with tophat reuse. Not a biggy in my book.

does the springs of the tein coilover just sit on the rubber piece and then the stock top hat sits on top of that? does the spring move around at all? I kno for my solara... I had stock shocks, ground controls and used stock tophats and the GC was annoying cause it would make all kinds of noise when turning haha

I really feel that it depends on the roads you primarily drive on. I remember when I spent like 8 months in South Florida... the roads over there are pristine and I could not tell the difference with my TEINS or riding in another TL with MEGANS or even one with a STOCK suspension.. thats how nice the roads are there.
But if you live in an area where there are alot of nasty roads... aka TRI STATE area then you will definitely feel the difference in the coilovers when seeking ride comfort. TEINS are definitely going to be more OEM like and hence the added price. I would not knock the MEGANS though as their dual chamber design is better than the SS as you can adjust ride height without altering spring preload. I belive TEIN makes this type as well but more money and not sure if they make it for the TL - I think its only out for the TSX.
If you live in an area with good roads go with the megans and save yourself money. If you live in an area like NYC then TEINS. Thats the easiest way I can put it.
