Tein S Tech vs H&R race springs!
#41
The Tien S Techs dont go low enough for my liking, the H&R's have such a nice drop that its worth giving up a bit of ride comfort. Believe me when i tell u that the worst feeling is installing lowering springs and not being low enough. With the H&R's you wont be slammed but you WILL completely get rid of wheel gap, ive had many different lowering springs and these give by far the best drop and the ride is not as harsh as people say it just is very harsh COMPARED to the S Tech's.

Does anyone know of the ride quality of the H&R Race vs. the S-Techs vs. Type S springs? I like the drop of the S-Techs and everyone says they're not too harsh but I don't want them to be softer than what I have now

From what I understand, the Type-S suspension is the firmest among the stock suspension, but I'm not sure how comparable it is to aftermarket springs.

No one seems to have any info on the difference between type-s and aftermarket or the actual spring rate of the Type S springs, has anyone found this?

The S Tech's will probably ride a bit softer than your Type S suspension so you might not like it since you're used to the stiff ride of the Type S suspension, the A Spec suspension is also pretty stiff. Not for nothing but to be honest if you can afford a Type S why would you go the cheap route and get springs instead of full coilovers? I mean you'll have fully adjustable dampening and height adjustment with most coilovers so my overall recommendation for you would be to not even bother with springs. I have an old 05 BASE and im going for the coils and you have a nicer/much more expensive model than mine *shrugs*

I was trying to keep my car project pretty low key, but if I want a stiffer ride by the time I buy H&Rs and a set of struts I might as well buy a set of coilovers.

Are Type-s springs different than base model springs?

When I bought my car, it was less than 1k more for the type-s so i didn't really break the bank on it compared to base. Im at 60k miles so I am going to use lowering springs until my struts go and then probably do coilovers at that point. Might be counter productive but if my struts last to 100k miles I will be happy.

Finally got my S-Techs installed today, and I'm very happy with the results. First impression is that cruising it feels almost 100% stock, going over bumps it is about 15-20% stiffer. Putting the rear sway bar in helped with cornering some, but this reduced my body roll to almost nothing.
Heres a few pics:

Yup pretty much same as stock but when cornering and what not you feel that its stiffer, your car looks good with the drop. Its still a bit high for my personal liking though id want to go about an inch lower and add the a-spec kit.

If I could put on the base model 07-08 a-spec on I would rather do that.

Tein SA coilovers $870 shipped
Konis + H&R $720 shipped
ISC Coilovers + free ingalls camber kit ~$1000 shipped
I'm leaning towards the Konis, only because from what I've read they make a great shock and the car will ride like it's stock. The springs will give about a 1.4-1.5" drop which clears the wheel gap, and if I need more, I can drop it another .8" via the shocks. Yes the coils provide customization, but once you find a good height, it's not like you're going to be adjusting the height all that frequently.

I am having the same dilemma right now. I can get a set of Koni Sport Shocks & H&R springs for $720 shipped. I already bought new tophats made up of all OEM parts which cost $120 shipped.

Are a-spec springs stiffer than the S-tech? And how do you know which feels stiffer? Because no one knows the spring rate of oem base or a-spec springs. So, you would have to have ridden in both or have friends that have both. Because there are no numbers to compare.

Hey gents, just picked up my car a few months ago and will have some extra money after the holidays to invest in the car. After much research I'm basically on the same page as cust0mx. I THOUGHT I'd decided on H&R Race w/ Koni Yellows, until I found this thread. My issue is I love the drop with the Race springs and am wondering if paired with the Koni's if the firmness will give some? Making it more with an STech feel with Race drop, if you will? Basically not wanting to cringe THAT badly on potholes. Also, after looking at the prices I'm starting to shop for coilovers but not sure how much use I'll get out of them as I don't see myself ever adjusting them. Thanks

Just finished my S-tech install. Drop is perfect in my opinion, but the ride quality has deteriorated a bit. I think the stock shocks may need to be replaced, not a ton of miles on them, but being 8 years old they have definitely seen better days. Ill report back once I get new ones on there and see how it rides.

No. Spacers are used to push the wheels towards the outside of the car, to make them "flush" with the fender. You do not have to buy them to make your springs work.
