the basics- you can adjust the height like most coilovers- you remove the wheel- unlock the lower spring perch nuts and move it up or down.
Same story on the SS

Basic has preset at factory, no adjustment possible- dampening and rebound stiffness- set to medium/stiff for the average driver
SS has 16 points of adjust for damp/rebound from super stiff to oe type soft
You use a small allen wrench in the top of the shock to adjust, simple on the fronts, requires hole behind rear seat or remove seatback to access rear adjusters

With the EDFC: you preset 3 buttons and can control the fronts or rears seperate
Because edfc uses micro fine gears in the drive motors- it makes 32 adjustments for super precise tuning at track day and fun runs of any type

Keep one preset set for in town wife/groceries in back, freeway and last- fun

So.. for an average college student who simply enjoys having a heavy foot and is not a driving fanatic or enthusiast, tein basics will do yes?

Then why are you making a change? Both of these have to do with what you said you aren't. If you just want to see your car dropped, there are cheaper alternatives if the ride means nothing.

I'm now at 16K satisfied miles... Still working great.

BTW, the EDFC "freakout" Errors I was having haven't happened again since I switched out the older Silver EDFC controller for the newer Black one. Yes the old motors are fully compatible with the new controller.

Darksom, where'd you mount your control box?

Kennedy, are you still having problems with the EDFC. I can go for months without any problems, then it starts to freak out.. i always get an error on the front side, i think the code is "EL". but anyway, i have had mine off for a while. i will check it out this week to see if it got better. Tein told me to return the motor and they would look at it if i wanted.. just havn't gotten around to doing it.

I think th eactual error is in the formawar eof the controller... I was getting EL, EE, and ER randomly about once every 2-3 weeks.

I installed the newer black control box back in July (left the old motors in place, have the new motors still in the box), haven't had an error yet - almost 4 months...

I think the problem is with the "refresh rate" at which the controller check the motors, which they seemed to address in the newer version.

See if Tein will swap out the old control box for you.

I mounted mine in the glovebox so it would be out of sight (theft deterrent), and plus I knew that I would not be changing it all day like some of the hot rods in here! Besides, it really is easy for me to reach, and most of the time I'm at a light or at a stop anyway when I want to change it. So it suits me just fine.

They will do just fine, I just recently bought the basics. Just for the fact of what you said exactly, I will let you know how I like them. I am putting them on my 06 next week.

What is the part number of the EDFC that everybody is using? I've seen 2 the silver and the black one. Is the black EDFC the newer model?

The one I posted a picture of on page # 2 of this thread, is the current controller. The number for the kit, from the instuction booklet, is P/N: EDKU4-K4469. Hope that helps.

Tein Basic

I have them on for +50K miles. No issues. I changed out the height so many time from slamming to 3" gap. Right now .5" gap front and rear.

Tight steering and handling, but harsh ride, especially over bad roads.

I'll be switching them out for 07 Type-S with H/R race springs. I'll keep you guys posted.

wow there really is a large disparity

wow there really is a large disparity between the amount of basic and SS owners i ddint think it was gonna be this drastic. i was actually looking into the basics, all that performance and handling is not really a big issue to me i just want a nice drop with a comfortable smooth ride. i didnt want to worry about my stock struts busting/ or prematurely wearing out with aftermarket springs, hence why i am considering the basics.... for those that have the basics, how long does it take to adjust the ride height, and for those with the EDFC how much more are the SS's with that feature in comparison to just a "regular" SS kit? thanks for any informations fellas!

Height Adjustments

Here's what I usually do:

1) jack up the car from the side or tail hook
2) spray a little wd40 on the lock rings, wait 5min
3) use the height adjustment tools
...and you're done.

Don't you have sf challenges on a NBP? any new mods on your car?

No new mods AccuraTein, just the usual tint, lowering, CAI, rsb, and dvd/navi. The car is already a ticket magnet.

Most of the 3rd gen TL members buy the TEIN Super Streets. The difference between those and the Basics in price is only a couple hundred dollars so that is why they upgrade. The difference between the 2 models was already mentioned but basically it as follows:

All of TEIN’s coilover setups include 4 shocks and 4 coil springs. Every kit is ride height adjustable but some kits offer more than that. Here is some more specific information on each model:

TEIN Basics – ride height adjustable, ride firmer than stock but are not stiff. Great street setup with a sporty feeling and good rebound but not never jarring.

TEIN Super Streets (SS) – ride height adjustable, dampening adjustability (allows you to adjust relatively how soft or firm the rebound/ride is – 16 levels)

the EDFC is a seperate kit from the shocks.
Spend a few hundred extra for the SS and set the car to what you want and forget it.

the edfc is for diehard players and gadget freaks, pilots and other knob turners
It gets installed after- if you can rig a mega car stereo you will have no problem running a few wires and tapping into the right power leads.

check with our vendors for current price- iirc, they are 375-400ish these days

Doesn't Tein have any kind of warranty on their product.
Yes, they do. 1 year against defect.

Also note, for less than $300 he could have had both rear shocks rebuilt like new.

(my first set) tein ss - 15,000 (current set) tein ss - 60,000K
- at around 15,000K of usage on my previous tein ss i hit an incredibly huge pothole- so damn huge i instantly felt convinced, deep within myself that my car was to never be the same again . when i checked the damp adjustment of the hit strut using the key, not EDFC, i just knew it wasnt the same click feel as before but was rather quite loose. so i bought another set. but since then its been a-okay.

ive always bought nothing but TEIN coilovers for my last couple of cars ive driven before this 3G TL now. i think they are great but one thing that GREATLY irritates me specifically with just the Tein SS line is the fact they are not independantly adjustable between the spring pre-load and the ride height. you guys too??? ive called TEIN so many times, and have grilled them about WHY IN THIS WORLD WOULD YOU MAKE A TOP-LINE, WAY MORE $$$ COILOVER THATS IN THE LUXURY( BIPPU-style/VIP) CLASS , A WAY MORE ADVANCED TECH COILOVER FOR THE TSX??? and not the TL... oh and that reminds me, WTF is up with our damn EDFC/ strut bar situation? they make strut bars- are they just stupid? ive even asked them and my reply was " well our market research said-this and that," - am i being unreasonable or something here? anyways, excuse me for the outburst there. i just reminded myself the b.s. from Tein again.

by the way, anyone here heard of or using the KW brand coilovers for the 3G TL? - German made, seems all that and a bag of chips from reading their specs, truly hard to find and double the cost or more of these SS kits.

Just so you know in case it happens again, Tein can completely rebuild and refurbish their dampers. You maybe did not need to replace the entire kit...

Well, keep in mind the more varied offerings on the TSX are due largely to the shared platform with the JDM Accord. There is no JDM version of the TL meaning there is inherently less global demand for more options. Based on our experience there is little need for an alternate damper system for the 3G. Maybe the CS has a chance, but it costs much more and still does not have the independent preload adjustment. I am not sure what you are referring to on the TSX though...the FLEX is not "way more advanced" than the SS, it just has an adjustable lower bracket. The CS is "way more advanced" but it does not have said bracket. Which system are you longing for?

The strut bar thing is only becoming an issue in the last couple years. I am not sure Tein really thought the SS/EDFC would be this popular for the 3G. At any rate, what could they do about it? When they look for demand for the strut bar they are looking for hundreds at minimum just to cover engineering and production expense. It is just not enough justification. Anyway, I am working on a bar that is about halfway done which should be everything you could want.

I find that when you factor in availability, factory support (DOMESTIC quick turn around support), quality, price, and performance (overall balance between ride and handling), Tein is pretty hard to be. Other companies meet or succeed my Tein standard in some areas only to fall short in others.

Well, keep in mind the more varied offerings on the TSX are due largely to the shared platform with the JDM Accord. There is no JDM version of the TL meaning there is inherently less global demand for more options. Based on our experience there is little need for an alternate damper system for the 3G. yes that's all true. by the way the adj. lower bracket is what allows the ride height to be independantly adjusted from the spring pre-load(stroke), right?
-also, if CS really doesnt have seperate r. height from s. preload than excuse my misunderstanding. i just thought the CS line was more geared for real BIP-PU (VIP)status cars. have you seen the application list for the CS line, im sure you have . you telling me the TSX deserves to be on that list over the TL? -and i could never believe the TL should be on the list either until it becomes a rear wheel drive car- even though the cost of a new TL should damn near justify it as BIP-PU , but that was my only point with that CS remark.
- my only real complaint is for the r.height/ s. p. load issue. but if you want my complete thoughts...then i dont think Tein is making the most logical decisions behind our TL products, or maybe they just were never really trying that hard to begin with. back when i once drove a 2002 TL and a CL , both Type-S's, i went with Tein's Best at those seperate times, which was the same ol SS but w/ EDFC's (an easy choice w/ no *asterisk for dealing with s. bar issue) i learned what pillowball upper mounts were after i bought them once for the CL. i'll never do that again unless i had an S2000. i thought my CL was kind of a luxury 2dr car until it made this constant bottle cap popping sound from all 4 struts over every bump i drove over, didnt matter anyways, i totalled that car not even a full day later. but my point is this- why did they make that SS-P kit for the previous gen TL/CL's ??? that level of equipment is for like the serious stuff -racing tracks, etc.. cars w/o the leather, navi, and all the creature comforts. you still with me? so then explain that one, because if it really came down to it, id say our 3GTL 6MT's deserve that stuff before any of the previous generation of ALL Automatic Trans. TL/CL's . yes i know, im comparing the SS-P's for the CL/2GTL to the 3G TL that wasnt even out yet-- so then why are they still making them pillowballs for the 2GTL/CL? how can that be "justified"?

- look,im not meaning to pick on Tein and i dont want you to think im an idiot whos just trying to argue with you. i just feel they should try harder for us TL's -especially these days, like any of us should be trying harder at whatever it is we are doing but they just seem to be comfortable staying at the same level for us. plus i obviously chose to repeatedly buy the SS's so id be contradicting my own actions to not be giving them praise as well. its never hard to see a good deal when factoring in things you said like: availability, factory support (DOMESTIC quick turn around support), quality, price, and performance (overall balance between ride and handling)
you are absolutely 100% correct, but i still agree with what i said as well.

-by the way, you serious about that strut bar? 2 things: how much and when? that would be so incredible, Tein better send you a Thank You card. i can only be as serious as you are, so consider me sold. i cant wait!
