SP9000 vs SP5000?
I'm looking for a sticky summer only tire for highway cruising and the occassional spirited driving (but no track or street racing).
My main criteria is highway stability and road noise under rain and dry.
I'm sure the SP9000's are better but are they overkill?
I already have winter wheels and tires so snow is not an issue.

Since you already have winter tires, I suggest you to go all out and get the stickiest summer tires available, such as S-03, Pilot Sports, etc. You don't have to compromise summer and winter tractions by geting some goes-no-where high-performance all-season tires, or half-way performance summer tires.

I just put on Dunlop 9000 and I think they're great. They were only $136 each for 225/45/17. It makes me really appreciate the sway bars now. The stock tires howled like crazy around any moderate turn. Now I really have to push a turn hard to get any kind of noise. I also think that at freeway cruising they are quieter than the stock tires. Go for the 9000.

Had SP9000s on my NSX. Hated them. Got S-03s now. Love them. But then again, I only figured out I didn't like the SP9000s until I tried them on a road course. But hey, they're great rain tires!!

Consider this. Porsche could puy any tires they want on the 911 Turbo.
What do they put on them.....
Dunlop SP9090s... the exact same tire as the 9000, just branded exclusive for the 911. I have hte 9090s on my TL, mix up by Tire Rack. I love em.

Thx, even though they cost an arm and a leg here in Canada ($300 CAD) I went for the SP9000's.
If they're anything like the 8000's on my A4, I'm sure I'll be happy.
But they are almost double the price of what I could've got the 5000's for yikes.

SP9000's all the way. I compromised this time and needed an all-season tire, so I went with the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S..They are VERY pricey(over $200 for a 17" tire!), and I don't think they are worth the money. They aren't bad though, but I still would have preferred the Dunlops if I went with another summer tire.
