which A/S tire best for light snow?

I need to replace the tires on my 05 tl. I'll probably stay with the 235/45-17 size. Can anyone offer personal advice on any of my choices in respect to WINTER traction observations?
Yoko avid w4s
continental extreme contact
goodyear eagle f1 a/s

ps. any good reasons pro or con for bumping up to 245/45?

I am on my second set of Continental ContiExtremeContact's. Just got them installed for about $125 each.

According to tirerack (if I remember right) they are slightly better then the Goodyears in snow. Where the Goodyears are slightly better on dry pavement. I was really between these two tires but, for the savings I decided to go with the Continental's again.

I didn't really look at the Yoko's.

Going wider to me would be worse not better in the snow.

If you end up on the Goodyears I would be interested in knowing what you think of them.

I have PZero Nero M&S on mine and am very happy with them. No problems last winter, great dry/wet handling, and they're quiet. I bumped up to 245.

Minnesota resident here - we get a metric ton of show here and I own the BS RE960A/S 17" 245 tires.

I'm rating these tires based on 12k miles, 1 winter under my belt.

I personally give this tire in snow (1-4inches) on the ground a 6.0/10.0

Snow (2-4inches) = 6.0/10.0
Snow (1inch and under) = 7.5/10.0
Rain = 9.0/10.0
Dry = 8.5/10.0
Slush = 7.5/10.0

i have the pirellis too, and i have gotten some good use out of them. not great in deep snow, but they still got me through the winter. very quiet, good grip, have lasted me 35k and will probably last at least another 5k. i know there are better, but these are still really good.

i am doing the snow tire this coming winter, but i think i may still stick with a nice pair of all seasons just for the wear life for the rest of the year.

good luck with your choice

I did notice some tramlining but, not enough to be annoying. Roads around here just suck anyway. Noise levels were always decent. I did ok in the snow with them and even was surprised a few times going up some of the hills around here in lightly snow pack roads with a few SUV's off the road and a few other cars stuck as well. I try to drive slow and steady in the snow. Sometimes though halfway up a hill some tool will pull out in front of you off a side street and I have to slow down. Even then I Was able to make it up the hill.

I can not find my receipt for the last set right now. I think it is probably in my car. If I find it I will let you know what mileage I got out of the last set.

I also had the Pirelli PZERO NERO M+S and liked them alot. When they wore out I was going to stick with them but, they were a bit pricey for me at the time. I think I got a sale on them the first time. Anyway I switched to the Continental ContiExtremeContact and also liked them.

My brother also had Continental ContiExtremeContact on his 2003 Mustang Mach I and thought they were a very decent tire for the money.

Just a follow up on my previous posts. Other then the original Bridgestone Turanza's I was happy with both the Pirelli's and Continental's.

Bridgestone Turanza EL42 12,436 miles 15 months 250ish a tire (rip off)
Pirelli PZero Nero M+S 19,172 miles 17 months 149.99 a tire
Continental ContiExtremeContact 20,442 miles 17 months 121.99 a tire (now 124.99)

Probably pushed the Pirelli's and Continental's about 1000 miles more then I should have. Bridgestones proably about 3K too much. They were down right scary in the rain.

I did not measure tread depth with a gague so I can not say which tires got more wear for sure but, both were 18K to 20K for me. For about $120 less a set I thought for me the Continental's were a better value.

Prices above were for single tire not mounted or anything.

Eagle F1's are pretty good in light snow....we had 1-2 inches this year and that didn't even put them to the test. Any deeper and I couldn't tell you the answer. Dry traction is great and wet traction is just insane...it might as well be dry. Side note-with my previous BFG kdw's when I hit VTEC in 1st and sometimes 2nd gear tires would spin just under acceleration. That's all gone with the F1's. I will buy these again.

In addition to my post, my Average MPG's dropped 1-2mpg due to tire materials and wider tires I'm sure.
