Question RUBBING?!? Help Please...

I just got some 20" rims and it wasn't rubbing when I left the wheel shop but then as I have been driving around town I have noticed that when I go over a dip in the road when the suspension bottoms out (not literally) or is at its lowest point there is a slight 'krrr' sound like the tire is rubbing. It is coming from the rear wheels on both sides, but when I go look at the tires there are no marks Anyway here are the specs on the tires and any help would really be appreciated.

225/35/20 35mm offset

THANKS!

Do you have an A-Spec kit? You dropped? I suspect you're rubbing on the inner fender, but then again with a 35 offset are you tucking at all or does your wheel sit flush? How wide is the rim? Is the sound rubber/plastic or metally? Anyhow, it is probably b/c you're running a 35 series tire. If you drop down to a 30 series, that would probably help.

Here is a pic of my car and wheels... they sit pretty much flush and the width is 8.5" (forgot to put that in the first post... DOH!) It has no drop at all and is not A-Spec or Type S but I beleive it has the A-Spec kit on it (sorry I am a new TL owner) The rubbing sounds like plastic against rubber from what I can tell. I will try to get pics from an angle soon to give you a better look.

remove the wheels and look for "shaved" parts of the fender liner...and plastic surroundings...if tire rubs..it will leave marks on where it rubs.

35 offset will push the edge of the rim closer to the outside resulting in less clearance

Thanks for the info... I am going to put it up on a lift tonight and we'll see what I find out.

There's also a plastic piece on the A-Spec kit that may need some sanding down. It's where the kit attaches to the rear bumper. There are some screws that hold it against the bumper. I small corner of it might need to be shaved off.

I have 35 series right now. I still rub with the coilovers AND rolled fenders AND negative camber. It's either the plastic piece on the ASPEC or inner lining of your fender- that's where mine is rubbing. If you get 30 series tires, I don't think you'll have any rubbing after that.

I looked at that after reading your post but I don't see any markings at all to indicate that it is rubbing there. I didn't get a chance to put it on the lift this weekend either. The wierd thing is that it only rubs when I go over a bump or a dip, so when the suspension drops it rubs for just a second. Now I did do another test this weekend when I went out drinkin' and that was to put 4 people in it. When it has 4 people it will rub when I take corners at normal speed so I have to slow down when cornering. The thing I'm confused about is I don't see any rubbing marks on the tires?? I'm just going to have to take the tire all the way off and get in the wheel well and look.

WHEW! OK so its not just me!! WOO HOO!! haha Anyway so if it is just the inner plastic of the fender (which I think it is) then do I have to worry about it rubbing??

I guess not really, but I hate that sound... My tires are still A OK, but it sounds bad when I have people in the car.

I KNOW WHAT YOUR PROBLEM IS..... 99.99999% SURE!

I have the same setup with 20's, right now you dont notice it cuz you havn't been riddin the 20's long enough to show the wear. The rubbing is happening on the ASPEC KIT torward the back of the wheel well. NOT A BIG ISSUE AT ALL... right now I bet its rubbing some of the clear paint off of the tab that folds into the wheel well, after that, you will start to rubb off the paint and start to see the black of the plastic fromt he KIT. To fix it, just cut the top inside corner of the kit off.

The reason this hapens is because the shocks & springs are angled a bit torwards the rear, instead of straight up & down. Therefore when you hit a dip & your tire sinks into the wheel well, it also travels torwards the back. (just enough for your 20" tire to rub against that ASPEC KIT.)

So you can sleep easy tonight, when this happened to me, my main worry was about rupturing or slicing the tire with the metal part of the upper fender. Luckily it was alot less than that.

The rubbing is not a big issue regardless.... If you dont have the aspec kit or mudflaps, you might not even rub.

So I was going to just cut that corner off but then I thought well maybe it would be worse that way because its giving it a sharp edge?? Plus there is that screw right there, I just took a rubber mallet and went to town with it it moved about a half an inch and seems to be OK. You think I should cut it and ill be OK?
