Replacement Tires

Bought my 05 TL last week and it has Nessen N7000 tires on it. They are in decent shape and my guess is they probably were replaced about 12k miles ago. Does anyone know anything about these tires as I am guessing they are a Korean tire company. They are relatively quiet with the exception of the front right tire that is generating some noise (not terribly). They were rotated about 700 miles ago so hopefully some of the noise will start fading.

I know the Michelins are crazy expensive and no way in hell am I paying $250 + for a tire. What is a good replacement tire in case I ditch these Nessens without braking the bank? I am looking at All Season with a good ride and are relatively quiet.

The Nexen N7000 is quite an inexpensive tire, somewhere around $80. Depending on your bank account, look at the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus in 245/45-17 @ $175. A less expensive tire that provides all around durability with a large tread foot print, look at the Yokohama W4S in that size @ $114. The Yokohama Advan S.4 is also a great all around tire @ $173. The only problem with the Yoko's are that after sitting they will flatspot, but that will clear up quickly once under way.

If you do a search, you'll find that 90% of the tires available will be recommended by someone, so it boils down to personal preference. Just do a lot of research and look over on the Tire Rack website for customer survey data that you may find helpful.

IMHO, stay away from Bridgestones.

I had some Bridgestone Serenity on my G35 and they were the quietist tire I have ever had. They gave up some performance for this reason but a good tire for the most part. One thing I did notice is right around 20,000 mile mark, i was feeling sharp bumps in the road more. Not sure if this was the tire but it was very noticeable. I had another set up Bridgestones on another car a few years ago and noticed the same thing as they wore down. I had PLENTY of tread left on the Serenity tires. They were still quiet and no uneven wear. Problem is they are crazy expensive on the TL.

The Continental Extreme Contact DWS, Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum, and Dunlop SP Sport Signatures are rated very high on Tire Rack.

agree with those suggestions, though I think the Dunlop's will give you a pretty bump ride where you feel the road a little more, that's just been my experience with Dunlop's in the past!

I'd also recommend the Michelin Pilot Exalto's; they are a pretty nice high performance tire and don't so ridiculously like the OEM Michelin's do! plus, they are two tire speeds lower which will give a nice, quiet, and comfortable ride, if that is what your looking for!!

I've been pretty happy with Bridgestone RE760's. I've run the RE7 series since my OEM tires separated on me four five years ago

I just got the Hankkook Ventus V12's and really like them. The road noise is pretty low and they got high marks from other people, most were Vette owners. The price wasn't bad either.

^ - Good to hear. I was looking at them for my Supra. Those forums are pretty dead and I wasn't able to get any feedback. They are a great price too.

I agree they look like fantastic tires. Are they quiet? The tread pattern looks like maybe later on after they get a few miles they could become rather noisy. The only thing that makes me skeptical right now is they are so new and have not been on the market long. Tire Rack is rating them very high but what will they be like at 20K miles? There are no longevity reviews yet.

The Bridgestone RE960 Pole Positions are getting rave reviews but they are fairly expensive. Also every Bridgestone I have had seem to get hard or rough riding a little over 1/2 way to the end of their life. Kind of like a woman...lol

I talked to Tire Rack this morning. The Conti DWS is on backorder till about the 2nd week of March. We did talk other tires and another poster here kept mentioning the Pirelli PZero Nero A/S. They rate consistently high on Tire Rack and the salesman and I talked about them compared to other Performance All Season tires. I am really starting to lean towards them. A little pricey but may be worth it in the long run. They just seem to do everything well especially in the handling department.

Hey Sleeper,

Just installed Yokohama Avid W4S's on my 06' in 245/45. These tires have a treadwear of 400, which is very high for a W rated tire. I have only put a few miles on them so far, and they grip well and are very quiet. I got a great deal from an ebay seller who happened to be local ($449 OTD). Also Discount Tire has good prices on different brands on ebay.

Good luck

I picked up the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus last week. They have been amazing so far. They were $180/each from the local tire shop. I had them price match online from a site with free shipping. The treadwear rating on them is a 500 I believe, but they are far stickier than the treadwear rating leads on. I would highly recommend these to anyone...and they also come with a 45,000 mile warranty.

Thats what the local tire store is recommending. They want ~$750 and thats mounting, balancing, free rotation, and 4 free oil changes for a year.

Sounds a bit steep. If it's a independent shop, you might be able to negotiate (cash talks).
Let me know if you want to see pics of them installed.

If its no trouble you can send some pics.

Yes I thought they were a bit steep on the price but they are adding in 4 oil changes for a year. That is a $120 value but obviously that is factored in the price of the tire. Like the old saying goes "pay me now or pay me later"...lol.

I could use some help, I have to replace my Bridgestone Serenity's on my car in about 1 or 2 months and I want a replacement tire that gives the more comfortable ride quality and lowest noise level; I've done extensive research on here, edmunds, tirerack, and several other tire sites and have come up with a short list of the tires that seem to give the best ride quality and lowest noise level and would like to hear which one of these you would recommend? Ride quality and noise are my top priority with tires and I have spent a lot of time narrowing the list down to the following:

Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus
Continental ExtremeContact DWS

thank you in advance for your suggestions and they are greatly appreciated!!!

Call Tire Rack and talk to them. They are very helpful. I would add Pirelli PZero Nero to your list

Its funny you should mention them, I forgot to add them to my list but I was hesitant with them because even though tirerack themselves rated them more comfortable and less noisy then the Michelin Pilot A/S Plus, the consumer reviews for the Prielli's on the 3rd Gen TL talked about how after not too many miles those tires got really noisy and a little bit rough riding and that the tread didn't last too long!

I don't know though if I really need a UHP all season, I most likely will go with the Kumho's or Pilot Exalto's! If I even went with UHP tires, I most likely would get the DWS's because they are rated the highest in every category right now and cost pretty dirt cheap but the only big downside to them right now is that they are still relatively new and their is no long term update on the how the ride, noise, and tread is when they get about 20k miles on them!

The Yokohama Advan S4: W speed-rated, pretty close to OEM MXM4s in low road noise and with better traction. FWIW, the MXM4 and Advan S4 are UHP all-season tires, likely not as quiet as a Grand Touring all-season tire like the Serenity.
I paid about $190 per tire for the S4s-- mounted, balanced w/9.25% sales tax in Los Angeles County.

true, I do keep that in mind but the Michelin and Pirelli UHP was rated higher in ride quality and noise level compared to the Yokies!

But you are right, of all the tires I mentioned, a HP or Grand Touring tire is designed to give a better ride obviously than a UHP- like I said though, I probably don't need anything greater than a HP tire because the most I'll ever be out in is light snow about 2-3 inches at most and that is maybe 2 or 3 times a year in the winter! if its more than that, I don't go out!

Were the reviews off Tire Rack? I read mainly very high reviews and nothing what you mention off Tire Rack consumer reviews. In fact, I was extremely impressed with most of the reviews. Check out all reviews for the Pirelli and what cars the tires were on. Might change your mind

I also talked to a rep from Tire Rack and he recommended Dunlop, Conti DWS, and Pirelli. I agree with you about the long term review of the DWS. I ended up ordering the PZero Nero A/S and a local tire shop matched their price and getting them put on for $750 total.

yeah, well I have never had good luck in the past with any Dunlop in regards to good ride quality and low noise but hey it can change by vehicle as well!

anyway, if I was getting a UHP, right now I'd probably do the Pirelli's like you did simply because the long-term validity of DWS's has yet to be determined plus the Pirelli's are little less in price then the Pilot Sport A/S Plus and both comparison test Tirerack did with the Pirelli's and Pilot Sport A/S - the Pirelli's were ranked higher in ride quality and noise level compared to the Michelins!

if when people get 20-30k miles out of their DWSs and still say they ride, handle, and are quiet still than there would be no doubt, for the price and excellent characteristics then the Conti's would kick the Pirelli's and Michelin's butt!

I think you made the right choice getting the Pirelli's put on because right now the DWS's are too much of a gamble! mise let other people be the guinea pigs for long-term capabilities! and by the time your Pirelli's are worn out you'll know if the DWS's will be a great replacement or not!

I'm most likely going to go with the Exalto's A/S!

I hope they do well and from the reviews I feel they will. I think the Exalto is a good one also. The ONLY thing thats weird is Tire Rack doesn't list it for the TL. Why is that? Does it have less of a speed rating or what???

well its tricky, if you do the tire search by putting in Acura and then TL and then the year it doesn't list the Exalto's because its speed rating is H, where most and the OEM is W, which is what I currently have on my serenity's

if you do the tire search by putting in just the TL's tire size, 235/45/17 all tires in that size regardless of speed rating are shown and the Exalto's then finally show up

I was speaking with several people about this issue of speed rating a few months back on here and everything about the Exalto's is right for the TL except the speed rating is two down so instead of W- 168mph the Exalto's are rated H - 149mph and unless you are going to do more than 150 mph with the TL I don't think I have anything to worry about

the most I've ever done is 100mph to pass a smart ass tractor trailer driver on the interstate! plus, the lower the speed rating, the better the ride quality tends to be!

I looked at the Exalto and it looks like a great tire. I am sure you will like it. I really liked the Serenity I had on my G35. They gave up some in handling but for day to day driving and quietness, they were great. Of course I think they are waaaaaaaaaay to expensive for the TL but its a slightly larger size but no way am I going to pay that kind of money for a tire. I know you get what you pay for but these tire companys have us by the balls so to speak. Case in point motorcycle tires. I have a Honda CBR1000rr and tires for it or any sportbike are outrages. They are as much per tire as highend car tires and 10% of the rubber. Just crazy but its the price we pay to play I assume.

What is the topend of a stock TL?

I can offer a lot of information for the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and A/S Plus tires since I have owned three sets on two different cars ('02 manual Altima SE and my current '04 manual TL). I had a set of the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires installed on my '04 TL eleven months ago.

This is the tire the 3G manual TL should have had as the factory OEM tire. The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tire did produce a little road noise under positive and negative throttle applications (manual transmission) when on smooth asphalt. This noise was very similar to the sound you would hear when driving on a smooth road shortly after a rain had stopped and the street was still had moisture on its surface. With the new "Plus" series in this tire, this noise has been significantly diminished.

The new "Plus" tire is better in every respect that its predecessor. Handling, ride, noise (which I really hate), wear, tracking, directional stability... it's all superb with this tire on the TL. And there is zero flat spotting, too.

Hope this helps.

will 245's rub?

Great thread... I'm also needing to replace my tires on my 07 TL. DWS or the Nitto INVO's... still debating between these two. For what it's worth http://www.discounttiredirect.com have some better prices and carry different brands than TireRack. I've ordered from both places and both have great CS.

My question though, won't the 245's rub at full turn though? I'm sticking with 17's and I thought I was stuck with 235's. I don't want to use spacers but would like the larger tread if it doesn't rub.
Thanks

Agreed!! The serenity's were a great tire for the first 10k miles I would say, super quiet and road pretty smoothly, but shortly after 10k they went down hill quickly - now a little of it was my fault, I had a really bad misalignment for about 4k miles that caused some uneven wear but I had that correct! I'm at 17k miles on the tires now and the backs are at 3/32nds and the front 5/32nds; the ones on the back were the ones that were on the front during the misalignment and right now I'm trying to get to 20k miles till I have to replace them!

even with the 4k mile mis-alignment they should not be worn down this quickly; overall I'm pretty disappointed with them because they are a extremely expensive tire, luckily I only paid 100 bucks for all 4 tires total in an adjustment from Bridgestone because of the hell I went through with the OEM Bridgestones! at this point, the ride is pretty lousy with them and the noise level has increased considerably so I know they will be on their way out soon! I just can't believe a tire as expensive as these did not even last 20k miles and even with a 4k mile mis-alignment they should have lasted a little bit longer then this, oh well! thank God I didn't pay full price!!!!

Just settled on DWS to replace OEM HX MXM4 on 07 TL S. At 41K, it's time for Mich's to go. I want to go a little wider profile for looks, ride, and to better protect OEM painted rims from stupid driver incidental contact with curbs.
245/45 DWS's don't look to be a problem size wise, but 255/40 or 255/45 are what gets it wider, a little worried about the later rubbing being both wider and larger dia.

Yes your alignment must have been waaay out because I had a little over 20K miles on my Serenity and had plenty of tread left. Maybe 1/2 worn and still very quiet. The one thing I did notice is I started feeling the bumps more and it was like the tire just felt harder or more rigid.

well I mean, it was out of alignment but not severely misaligned; I didn't have it out of alignment long enough that I couldn't even get half the suppose life of the tire that I should; I think the tires have a 45-50k mile warranty on them, would have to look that up but regardless of the warranty, I only had a mis-alignment for AT MOST 4k miles, I might have expected to maybe lose 10-15k miles off the tires but to not even get 20k out of them is ridiculous especially for their high price!

The only reason I wouldn't get them again is because for costing almost $245 a tire, they should last a lot longer then this, even with some uneven wear! oh well, nothing in life is fair!
