Is It Really This Much?

Hi,

Here's the situation:
I have a cracked rim and I bought a new rim from Steve at www.acurapartssource.com. He was really nice, took a pic of the rim since I wasn't sure which rim I have, and was able to ship it off the next day.

Anyways, I went to a service shop on Monday, but the guy said that I got there too late and the garage is all packed up with cars even though another guy said it was fine to come. That's not my concern though.

I sent them an email:
"Hi,

I came over at around 5:30PM on Monday with the 2006 Acura TL that has a cracked rim. I have ordered the rim and it's currently being shipped. How much would it be to remove the tire from the cracked rim to the new rim? Would I need an alignment? If so, how much would that be? Also how much would it be for fix the curb rash on the rims?"

His response was (btw, his subject was "audi rim" so I was like ):
"20. to mount tire, should have 4 wheel alignment - 145., approx 100. to repair and refinish a wheel, maybe less if more than one."

Does it really cost that much? An alignment for $145? I think NTB was around $130 for a year's worth of alignments... And $100 to get rid of curb rash? Jeez, I might as well get new rims all around then.

Should I be shopping around or does it really cost this much?

Lexus charges $99 for an alignment (at least the one I went to).

$20 to mount/balance a tire is a bit more than indy shops charge, and this isn't an over-sized rim.

But $100 to repair/refinish a rim isn't too bad.

Moved.

$20 to mount = OK
$100 per wheel for rash = OK
$145 to align = too much.

Get the 3-year deal at NTB for $139.

Oops, thanks for moving it. And thank you for responding!

Wow, I guess I just don't know how much things are in the automotive world. $100/wheel for curb rash... Certainly makes me want to be extremely careful not to curb it next time around. Do you know if it looks good after fixing the rash?

The 3-year deal at NTB is usable at any NTB, right?

Check to be sure, but I think so. NTB and Tire Kingdom (same company).

And like PB said, some of the other prices might be a tad high, but they are reasonable. The alignment price is not reasonable.

That's pretty sweet. I had no idea this was even possible.
