Re: TL and Snow

Anyone have any experience driving their 2004 TL in the snow yet? I have yet to do so but with the winter months coming I wanted to know.

Thanks in advance!

It's pretty comfortable and the car is quite controllable. Some ppl say EL42s are bad in snow, but generally this tire is ok. If you live in the snowland, please have your snow tires ready.

Well, in Central Canada, a set of snow tire is a must for 235 tread width. I have been driving with Bridgestone WS-50 for over 900 km in snow. They are very good.
However, I would not recommend Bridgestone LM-20 or LM-18 for deep snow driving.
Just have 4 inches of fresh powder and VSA only kicks in once.

EL42's in snow are very marginal at best. We have had a couple of fairly decent snows here this year and several last year and I do not feel very comfortable with them. I am considering shopping for either some dedicated snow tires or maybe some better all season tires. Tire Rack reviews point toward Pirelli PZero Nero's as being one of the best overall. But I haven't made up my mind yet.
I have a 6MT which does make it a bit trickier to drive than an automatic. The car is very sensitive to throttle inputs in the snow with these tires.

I've only driven my TL in the snow once. But I had Michelin Pilot Sports, not the awful Bridgestones. The TL handled great. I felt very confident driving in the snow. I was passing SUVs left and right.

I drove last december in the stock el42's.. sure it slid cuz we had 2 inches of iced over slush, but the VSA was so incredible the car was very well behaved. get in an empty parking lot and floor it.. its weird to feel your foot down, and the tach at like 1,000rpm. It just crawls happily around a turn and goes merrily along its way.

I drove in icy and snow condition with my YOKOHAMA AVS WINTER , very good traction on ice and on wet pavement, impressing. May be less good in snow. But i prefer a better grip in ice, because ice is less predictable and take you by surprise.

When the snow it's too deep, you have to disable VSA to allow the wheel put away the snow by spinning.

I drove in snow yesterday. Those el-42s are terrible. No grip at all in the snow. Mind you I'm comparing this to the Icetracks I had on my del sol when I was driving it in winter. Those were great tires!

With the EL-42s yesterday I had the ABS kick in with barely 1/2 the pedal travel. Since the tires didn't grip it was easy to lock them up. This also made the VSA kick in because the yaw sensor detected I wasn't going straight under braking.

Then there was the starting from a stop. No grip at all. Guess what? yup... the traction control kicked in. And I wasn't even going that hard on the gas! Damn civic behind m was honking the horn for m to move. How embarassing, being honked by a civic. I bet he had snow tires!!! The grip was so bad I switch my 5AT to sportshift and tapped it up into 2nd gear to start from a dead stop. Sure I didn't accelerate as fast as in first but at least I had a bit more grip.

Needless to say: I'm going shopping for snow tires this week. Those EL-42s just don't cut it! They're too fat too! Snow tires are typically narrower to improve bite.

This is pretty bad, I'm tempted to get the del sol out of the garage, remove the racing stuff on it and slap my old snow tires on it. Yes, those EL-42s are that bad!!!

I can't say much about the TL itself in the snow because the tires are so bad. With better sow tires on I should be able to give a more adequate assessment of how the TL handles snow as a car.

It's fairly obvious people: Don' go cheap on tires. They're the most important part on your car. Acura has failed in this respect in my oppinion.

I put Dunlop SP2 snows on my TL, just got them last Thursday, Yesterdays snow in Toronto was no problem. I believe you get the right Tire for the season, all seasons are really 3 seasons.

The important thing to remember is that your all seasons are not wearing out sitting in the Garage, so why not opt for the tire that gives you a better chance at avoiding an accident? Snow tires are cheaper than the smallest insurance claim.

I feel like I say this all the time, but tires are everything, especially in the snow. The EL-42s stink in the snow. A dedicated set of snow tires is the only way to go. Anything else will be a compromise.

We finally hit winter a few weeks back here in Winterpeg... no fun (Last year hit -54ºC with windchill). I currently have a set of 17" Nokian' tires that I placed on a set of factory rims. They are absolutely great tires; no slippage whatsoever, and considering my street is always covered in a sheet of ice, I have to say I have been very impressed.

Obviously, this thread is only talking about Tyres instead of mobility and control of TL over snow. SO move to Tires subF now.

Mine are okay, just have to pay attention when it's actually snowing.
