Rack and Pinion

I took my 05 TL to the dealership today because the "squealing noise on cold mornings" has returned but this time it is on steroids. The power steering hose recall addressed the noise the first time, now it was back.

I took the car in and the technician noticed that the power steering reservoir was out of fluid, which was weird because I went for an oil change three weeks ago and there aren't any stains or puddles in my driveway. Well I get a call from the dealer, while I am with the fiance looking at hotels for our wedding dinner and party, I get a $1600 surprise which was to replace the rack and pinion because one of the seals is completely gone.

After my complaining about how this should be covered by Acura they call back within an hour with good news, they are only going to charge $109 for the alignment.

By the way the car has 68k miles and I just wanted to post this for anyone who might have the same symptoms that I was having.

Out of curiosity, have you run any fluid other than the Honda fluid? I've read this is a common problem when running something other than OEM fluid.

Interesting, I just came back from Acura today for the same problem (power steering noise) and it turns out it was the steering rack at fault. I've got an 05 TL w/~60K or so. I've got the extended warranty so thankfully it's covered. They're ordering the part and I'll get it fixed when it comes in.

On a side note, when it was really cold here in FL 2 weeks ago, I had a LOT of noise. Figuring it was the PS fluid, I bought some more to top it off even though it seemed fine. The noise didn't come from the pump, but eventually went away when the car warmed up. I guess that was the problem.
