PUzZLeD...can you figure this out???
ok boys and girls...so about 7k miles ago i put 4 new tires on. today i went to get them rotated and it turns out that i've managed to get tread on the rear tires to about 25% while retaining about 75% on the front. wear on the rear seems pretty even so it wouldn't be camber so what could it be?

It's your Toe settings. Incorrect Toe measurements will destroy a set of tires quicker than any camber issues.
Put it on a 4 wheel Laser Alignment rack and have them adjust the toe setttings back into the spec range of tolerance.

I don't really know much about toe settings. but damn. 75% wear in 7k miles. That's crazy. The guys at Pepboys said that they can't align the rear wheels, which I'm guessing that it involves the laser alignment. Is this something that only Acura can perform? I'd like to keep the cost down as much as possible so if I can avoid acura i will.

You are at the wrong place for an alignment or any service!!
The lazer only makes it easy for the tech- it doesnt make any special adjustments- it just reflects and measures
The toe is the only adjustment possible on a stock TL
It would require installing camber kits to adjust camber, but toe on all 4 is a simple task
Go to a real alignment shop and find out what the readings are now
If the negative camber does not exceed 1.5 degrees its fine so set the toe
toe comes out at zero when finished alignment
I am guessing you did not get an alignment after the spring install/drop?

aren't the roads in nyc somewhere between brutal and destructive to rims and alignment?
One good pothole or curb hit will knock things right out of adjustment- sometimes bend things.
Look in the real phone book yellow pages for an import/honda specialist shop.
Ask them for a place if they dont do it there.
Many performance oriented shops and tire places that advertise doing lowered cars or larger rims...those are good
The cool trick now- is to excavate down a foot and sink the working parts of the alignment rack into the ground, so you can drive any car no matter how low- straight on from street level onto the rack. It goes up- the reader things go on the rims and out come the numbers

There is a KNOWN issue with rear tire wear. There is even a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) out on it. Of course, that TSB only applied to the 2004 & 2005 models so if you moniker is right (i.e. TL-S) you shouldn't need the TSB to be performed but if you really DO have the "regular" 2005 TL that is listed in your signature, then you may want to see if the Acura Dealership ever replaced the bump stops.
PS - The TSB also states that Acura will replace the OEM tires at their expense if they were shown to have been worn faster than normal. However, Acura will NOT replace any "after market"/non-OEM tires if they show additional wear. So, in short, get the TSB done and you will see the problem go away. All at ZERO cost to you....Hope this helps
