OEM wheels and Spray paint?

I was in car domain today and some guy had the same model and year and color of my TL and i couldnt help but look at his rims. It was stock rims and it looked like it was spray painted or painted matte black. It looked kinda good. To make long story short, i want to do it and im asking the gurus of this site if they have a preferred brand of spray paint that will do the same as he did on his rims.

Sorry i dont have pics as of right now and im trying to retrace the site so i can rip the pic and post it here to show the crowd.

Thanks

I used duplicolor for my rims. But I used engine enamel. IMO it holds up better than the wheel paint they sell.

I live in arizona, which is basically the dessert and alot of rocks fly out here on our 80MPH highways. How do you think it will hold up against blazing heat and bombardment of rocks? I have 20 inch chrome rims and dont like taking them to long trips on this highway. So i was thinking of matting my rims for long travels and still looks clean.. feel me?

I feel ya. My reason for painting my wheels was to experiment in what color my aftermarket wheels were going to be. I used Dupli-Color high performance wheel coating (4 coats), and then (2 coats of High performance wheel clear coat) .......BEHOLD

actually one more thing.. 1 can of the duplicolor spray, how much will it do? would 2 can be enough to coat the wheel 4 times per rim? If so i dont want to buy 4 cans and only use 2? If you can tell me how much each can .. can produce i would appreciate it..

To be on the safe side, get one can per wheel for the paint, 2 cans of clear should do the job. If i were to do it over again, I would have done 7-8 really light coats of color, make sure you sand them down with 200 or higher grit of sand paper (so the paint will bond easier), make sure to cover your valve stems with tape or something, and tape off the tire. Wait about 15 minutes between coats (even if they're light coats) The longer you wait, the better the results!
