New Shocks Recommendations

I need to replace the shocks on an 07 TL, Base model, AT. The car has 210,000 miles on it and plan on driving it as long as I can. I'd like to keep the stock ride or as close as possible to it. I know they don't sell the A Specs anymore, so what is everyone replacing theirs with these days? I'd like the whole shock assembly so I don't have to mess with the springs. Again, not really looking to upgrade in performance or spend too much on them as I'm not sure how much longer the car will last, but yet I don't want to have to replace them again in a year. Also, I plan on doing it myself and it's the first time I'll be doing shocks myself. I consider myself a novice DIYer and have the tools and the service manual. Anything special I need to know or pay attention to? I've searched around but haven't found any kind of how to or videos or anything for this car. Thanks for any help!

The easiest way to A) make sure the new shocks last and B) to make sure the ride is close to original, is to buy new OEM spring/shock assemblies (which are relatively reasonably priced). Of the four versions of the suspension for the 3G TL, you have what is reported to be the softest of the group. Since all of the shock assemblies are plug-and-play, you can pick the level of the firmness based upon the following (from softest to stiffest):
  • 2007-2008 Base TL, Automatic
  • 2004-2006 Base TL, Automatic
  • 2004-2006 Base TL, 6-Speed Manual
  • 2007-2008 Type-S TL, either transmission

07-08 TL Base is your best bet as the older model actually cost more than the MMC.
