Need advice

My summer tires are worn out; I'm keeping them on for another month or so before switching to snows but come spring I'll need new tires so I figured I might as well get new wheels to make swapping between summers and snows easier.

-Wheels must clear Brembos.
-17" is fine with me; I can do 18" too but not bigger.
-I'm not looking for really nice $1000 wheels. Just something that doesn't look like ass on an anthracite gray TL.
-Why are OEM wheels so hard to find locally on craigslist?
-Are the wheels available on Tire Rack any good? I've never heard of half the companies on there. They're cheap but I don't want them to crack on horrible Boston roads.
-I'm considering Type S reps from eBay but they're more expensive than what I'm seeing on Tire Rack.

Send me a PM, we may be able to help you get setup with a specific set of OEM wheels if you know what you're looking for!

Your best bet off TireRack for a performance wheel would probably be Enkei or OZ. If you're looking to buy something super cheap for a set of winters just pickup an extra wheel! It adds to the cost a bit, but at least you know if one cracks, you can have another one ready.

If you're looking for something decent (aftermarket) for under $1K, you're likely looking at either a new set of Rotas...or a used set of Enkeis.

Motegis or Konigs are also probably fine for street use.

XXR...maybe ok...but they weigh as much as the car.

Bumping this thread as I am in a similar situation as you...will need new summer tires, my OEM wheels need refinishing or replacing, MA resident with an anthracite gray TL.

Which summer tires are you looking at? I'm trying to decide between the new Continental ExtremeContact Sports or Michelin PSS. There is about a $30 difference/tire from the Conti's and Michelins. Not sure the Michelins are worth the extra cash.

Re: OEM wheels, I am working a deal with a company called RimPro in Tyngsboro. They quoted me the same price to either refinish/straighten my current OEM wheels or replace them with a new or refinished OEM set from what they have in stock (no confirmation on that yet). Hoping for a set of 2007 OEMs as I like that design better than the 2004-2006...will report back.

Re: tire rack's wheels, my brother got a pair of OZ wheels for his '13 Accord Coupe EX-L last winter. They look great and have had no issues despite driving on our horrible roads.

FWIW: Our fellow member, tekopp, has a beautiful matching set of OEM TLX 17's, with 4 matching Michelin X-ice tires, ( used one season ). "Snow Tire setupCategory: Wheels & Tires
Price: $900
Private or Vendor Listing: Private Listing
Part Fits (you may select multiples): TLX 5G
Location (State/Prov/Terr): VA
Item Condition: Used

Hello all,

It is with sad news that we have left our 2015Acura TLX. We moved over to a Alfa Romeo. So with that being said I have a snow tire package for sale. The tires are Michelin X-Ice on OEM 17" TLX rims. Tires were only used one season and stored in a cool location during the summer. They do have the OEM TPMS sensors as well.

I am asking 900 OBO and also looking to keep delivery local to me in the Northern Virginia area.

If you are interested reach out to me and let me know and. I can be reached at tekopp73@gmail.com. Reasonable offer will be definitely considered. Also will have he Acura sunscreen and heavy duty mats posted soon. These all will be on eBay as well

Used last winter only

Cheers
HeyThomas, I realize, Your in Boston, and tekopp is in Virginia, but to me, this is one hell of a good deal. May be worth your while to see if you could work something out. I might add, I have dealt with Thomas in the past, and i find him a person of High Integrity, and can assure you, the description of his items for sale, is indeed accurate.

I'm probably going to get BFGoodrich G-Force Comp-2. I don't see any reason to put max-performance tires on it - it's a sedan, not a sports car.

The MPSS and (presumably) the new Conti will ride better, be quieter, and last longer than the Comp2.

Max performance tyres are specified for a lot of "performance luxury" sedans from the factory.

Sorry, I meant to say Comp 2 A/S. I currently have RE970AS Pole Position and I like them - the Comp 2 A/S has far better ratings so I should be happy with them, especially at $122ea. I still don't know why you'd put Super Sports on a TL - that's like getting R-comps for a Wrangler.

Have you driven on supersports? They're fantastic daily driver (summer) tyres. They're not for track use. They work great on sedans.

We have them on both daily drivers. One of them is a GD station wagon.

Plus...your analogy doesn't make sense. A Wrangler on R comps isn't parallel to a sedan on performance street tyres.

Your summer tyres are all season? Isn't that kind of a waste?

What's not impressive is you're comparing apples to oranges.

Almost every tire manufacturer makes both garbage tyiz and good tyiz. These definitely AREN'T garbage. As a long time and well respected member of AZine, I'd bet my life on these General AS05's.

Looking on TireRack there is only a $15 difference between the Conti's and the BFGoodrich G-Force Comp-2. I am not familiar with the exact differences between "Ultra High Performance" and "Max Performance" or the extra performance for the dollar, but the Type S did come with Bridgestone Potenzas. Quick search on here shows that at some point during the model cycle the Potenzas were apparently replaced with Michelin Pilots which are Max Performance tires.

Just a comment on the tires; the max performance summer tires available when your TL was built cannot hold a candle to the best performing All-Season tires of 2017.

I see your point but the same could be said for all seasons of 2017 when compared to performance tires of 2017. I will never buy another pair of all seasons but that’s just my opinion.

My point was that the vehicle came with max performance tires so I don’t see it unreasonable to reaplace them with the same.

Hmmm, and I look at it from the opposite side; why buy max performance summer tires which are both expensive and wear out quickly when the top rated all-season max performance tires are so very good and last tens of thousands of miles longer.

You make a good point which a lot of people would agree with. I think it comes down to l budget, what the buyer wants and what compromises you are making with a purchase.

I see all seasons as a good investment if you want one set of tires that will have longer tread life and don’t care about having max performance in either dry, wet or snowy conditions. For me I would rather have max performance/stopping power/traction etc for each season. Summer and snow tires will deliver that over an all season.

I guess I am willing to pay the premium to replace my tires more frequently though after having a family member in a near fatal accident due to a tire failure, it’s a price I’m willing to pay. The Michelin Primacys on my TL now are more expensive than the Contis I referenced here (currently), though I know in the long run it will be more expensive.

An accident due to a tire failure from a high end max-performance all-season? Not at all likely; those tires have the exact same speed rating as summer tires and are equally as reliable. Now if you're talking about a bargain basement no-name Walmart tire, yes, I might buy that.

I wasn't saying one type tire is more reliable than the other, but rather why I plan to replace my tires most likely sooner than somebody else. A quality all season and/or summer tire should have the same reliability.
