It’s about time for me to get new tires for my 05 TL Auto. I have narrowed my choice down to Michelin Pilot Sports A/S or Goodyear Eagle F1. I called around and I can get Michelin's for $155 each and F1's for $159 each (has $50 mail in rebate). Considering both these tires will cost me about the same, which one would you recommend from your experience? Also which ones do you think will last the longest (I would like to get at least 40k out of new tires)? By the way I think I am going to stay with 235/45-17.

Everything I've read they are both good performers. People swear by both.

The knock on the Michilin's has always been price. At $159 each, I'd be VERY tempted to jump all over 'em.

When the GY are at ~$150- - $160 and the Pilots are at ~$225, I'll take the GY all day long.

Wow....I've NEVER seen the Eagles more expensive than the Pilots....if it were me, at those prices, I'd take the Pilots!

Just an FYI: It's highly unlikely you'll get 40,000 miles out of either tires. Ultra high performance tires are not designed for longevity - one of the trade offs for the high performance.

I'd go with Potenza 960's or Yokohama Advan S4. Read up on the F1's at Tirerack. You may end up reconsidering.

Thanks for the info., so whats a reasonable number of miles to be expected out of these Ultra high performance tires? 20K? 30K?

I run the Pilots on my 04 TL and I love them. Tried the GY, but the handling seemed to suffer at higher speeds. (Don't look at me lilke that, I'm not the only one pushing my TL over the speed limit! )

Yep, 245/45's are $211. A good price - I have never seen them less than $220

See I could say the same about the Bridgestone's. It's all personal opinion however.
I did have a set of Bridgestone S03 Pole Position's that were nice tires w/exception to very nasty flatspotting - something every set of Bridgestone tires I have had has exhibited. But many others do as well in varying degrees. Michelin's have been the only tire that I find not to flat-spot. It's all in what they construct the tire out of. And even then, as long as it goes away quickly it's not that much of a hindrance.

i ride the pilots. same size. they are sweet. ride smooth, fast, corner well. and the tread pattern looks sweet. can't go wrong.

Depends on your driving.
I drive/my commute is 85% highway and I consider myself an easy driver. My Michelin PS2's lasted 23K miles. My co-worker runs the original Pilot Sports (not the "2's") on his BMW 330. He is on his 3rd set - he gets between 15-18K on a set but drives aggressively.

I would say on average, only expect 25K out of a Ultra High Perf summer tire. Go into it knowing that and you wont be pissed when you're replacing them at 22K etc..

The OP was referring to Michelin Pilot Sport All Season not PS2s.

I'd think that as long as you maintain the Pilot A/S properly, you should be able to get close to 40K miles out of them.

My original set of Michelin's lasted me for about 49k miles. I don't think that it too bad for a set of low profile tires. You might get only 20k out of your tires if you don't rotate them and drive your car like you stole it.

Get the Goodyear A/S Eagles. They are a little cheaper and they have the rebate. I wanted to replace my Michelin's, but the price of about $225 for each tire was over my budget.

I didn't mention my and my co-workers Michelin's due to the OP specifically looking for that tire. I felt his question involved overall life of ultra high performance tires etc.(though you are correct he started the thread focusing on Mich and GY's) I stated the above as a data point relevant to the info he was seeking.

As for the PS A/S, they are very picky about proper pressure and rotation. My last set "appeared" like they were going to last in excess of 25K, yet I sold the car prior to finding out. :-) Tis strange however that their is such a wide spread of mileage data on the PS A/S. I too have read several reviews that claim 45-49K miles and others that complain of only 20K.
Hard to believe they would last more than 30K given the compound - yet driving styles and proper care could make all the difference. I've also had many folks claim the tires were shot just because the tread was half gone. With tires, tread life is based from "day one to 2/32's of an inch of tread remaining etc.
Overall, price is the only negative on the Michelin PS A/S's. In the big scheme of things however, I'm happy to get 2+ years out of a set of great tires (30K on average). If truly being happy with a set of tires for the two years involves $225 per tire vs $125, I'm all for the extra cost.

Thanks for all the input. I have decided to go with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. I liked the reviews on GY F1s but considering they are little bit more expensive than Michelins, I decided to go with Michelins.
