Michelin Pilot Sport A/S "wearbar"

I put A/S Sports on my TL on 1/8/04

Got 23,000 miles on them.

Rotated them twice.

I now have "wearbar" on front tires. No wearbar on rear.

Has anyone with Sports gone longer than 23,000?

Is this normal??

I thought the Michelin Pilot A/S Sports were rated for 40,000.

Tirerack says no treadwear guarantee on Sports.

Any sport owner feeback appreciated.

1" from outside of tire.

Marks begin at 1" and go to about 1/2" (3 white lines)

Are these the OEM PS A/Ss you're talking about? When I traded in my '01 CLS the OEM tires had 30k miles on them and probably another 5k to 10k worth of tread left on them.

With any tire, wear results are dependent on your type of driving. Rotating twice in 23K miles isn't bad but if you drive aggressively you need to rotate much more often. I drive my TL like a gram-ma 90% of the time yet rotate every 5K miles or less. I do the same on the wifes Sub due to knowing she is a heavy breaker/a lot of stop and go stuff. If you rotate in a manner commensurate with your aggressive or otherwise driving, you should never see noticeable difference between front and rear wear. If you ave a mechanical problem i.e. alignment of front or rear (the TL is known for wearing rear tires out extremely fast if trunk/backseat is occupied) then that is a different story.
I had the PS/AS's on my previous car and never had any of the wear issues others have mentioned. As mentioned, 90% of the reason was due to me no longer drive aggressively (fast, but not aggresive...:-)). I also did not have the car long enough to see just how long the Michelin's would last, but with rotating, balancing, and maintaining proper pressure, all four tires were identical when it left my garage.
Where about on the tires is your most significant wear, outer edges, center, or equal across? The PS's are known for wearing out the center tread if remotely over-inflated.

Big picture - rotation, balance, and proper pressure is key to "maximizing" a "set" of tires useful life. But, if you drive a car aggressively, own tires that grip like Michelin PS's do, the trade-off will always be faster wear.

It is disappointing however when you spend near a grand on tires and within 2 years they need replacing. Then again, as I have learned through-out my life, having fun sometimes is expensive... (cheers)

???

"Wear-bars" are actually the small raised ribs running perpendicular to the tread within the groves between treads. They are spaced out etc. around and across the entire tire. I am no expert but I believe these "indicators", once the rest of the tread equals their hight (wears down to their level), represents about 2/32 or 3/32 of tread remaining. I believe this is also the "legal" limit a tire can be driven in most states....

Being a tire dope I may be calling what I have incorrectly.

They are white lines 1" from the outside wall of my tire.

Are these not "wearbars" and just a tire worn?

Bottom line - Can I still get some life with these tires if the white lines are showing through?

Or is it dangerous and should I get some new rubber pronto?

without a picture i cannot say for sure.... please post a pick for a better answer
but these "white lines" you are describing sound like the nylon/polyester belts that run around the tire for stability, strength, and the general shape of the tire... the tire should have grooves around the entire edge of the tire (anything that touches the ground while in motion) if you have no grooves in certain parts of the tire (edges, center, all the way across) then the tires are past time for replacement. if the tires have no grooves on certain parts and there are white lines/webbing showing then the tires need to be replaced NOW !!!

kj smitty described the manufacturers wear bars to a "t". that what they are, and thats what they do.... the less tread your tires have on them the less effective they are at keeping you on the road in harsh conditions (wet, snow, ice). tires should be replace almost as soon as the wear bares begin to show....

That sounds like you've gone WAY past your wear bars. The wear bars are little nubs in the treads that indicate when you have 2/32 of an inch or less tread remaining. Get new tires NOW.
