Looking for a STRONG set of wheels...

Hey folks,

Nearly 40k miles on my '04 TL and still loving every day of it. But I have one recurring problem that I'm hoping someone can help me solve:

I live and work in NYC, and I drive my TL on these pothole-ridden streets every day. Invariably, the stock wheels get slightly bent very very quickly. Nothing serious, but enough to create a steady and annoying vibration at 80mph+ on the highway.

I get the rebalanced/straightened every once in a while, but the next week they're banged up again.

SO -- I want to replace the stock wheels with an inexpensive aftermarket set, but one that is MUCH MUCH stronger. Anything that looks similar to stock is fine (not into the bling), just as long as the metal is tougher and can withstand the abuse of the NYC streets.

Any leads/suggestions/ideas? Am I looking for a particular type (forged? cast? aluminum? steel?)

Many thanks....!

nlh

Tou're bending the Stock 17"? if so, then damn, those are pretty strong, I ride on 19" and 20" wheels thru the 5 buroughs, on the BQE and all over the city, never bent a wheel. you just got to be careful.

if you're really worried about bending or crackin wheels, i'd go for a set of forged wheels. the only downside to that, is that forged wheels are usually pretty $$$$.

Heh...yep...bending them all over the place. My TL is not my careful car, and I got it to blast around the city like a maniac, so any tools I can get to help with that mission would help.

So I guess forged wheels are stronger than the stock (which are cast?)

Where do you get the wheels rebalanced and straighted? Can you tell me how much they charge? From what I could find, that was a $125 job. Seems if you're doing it regularly, that you're probably finding better places than I am. Thanks

Actually they are the weakest set of 17" wheels I have ever seen. I have bent a total of 8 of them on the same roads I have never bent any other brand of 17's on. I believe they were a bad cast or something.

Yeah definitely a lot more. Here are a couple more that people may or may not know.

SSR (buy em now they are going under)
Kenisis
Advan
Enkei (not all)
Work
Weds

However, with all those forged wheels comes a nice heafty price tag. Figure on spending $3-5k on Rims & Tires.

rims

Just staightened a 19" Antera 309 about 130 bucks. Thought about forged rims, yes they are stronger, but my wheel guy says they can crack instead of bending. A bent rim can be straighted a few times but when it is cracked my wheel guy will not touch it. I guess you have to pay the price to look cool. I would like to hear from anyone that has had the city fix there rim because piss poor paving jobs. i cant believe you are bending stock 17's. The roads in your town must be worse then Denvers.
