Looking into coilovers
Hi there,
I'm a newbie to this suspension stuff and looking into buying coilovers with a budget. Looking for generally a cheaper set that will not sacrifice ride quality much. Mainly just getting it for aesthetics, and hence, reducing wheel gap.
I was looking into either TruHart StreetPlus coilovers or Tein Basic coilovers. Can someone chime in and give their two cents on these coilovers ? Or suggest a different one. It'll be going on a 07 acura tl base with 145k km.
Thanks for the input!

I'm in the same boat, just needed the drop. It wouldn't be so bad if the front didn't sit 5/8" higher than the rear from the factory...but it does. Anyway, I almost went with Koni Yellow's and some springs, but I got a good deal on some BC Racing coilovers. I think they're a little more expensive than the Tein's, but again, I got a great deal. There are several threads here about the Tein's, just do a quick search, I think people love them.
If you can purchase from EcelerateRep, do that, they have great prices and Tom is impossibly cool. Ecelerate is also a Platinum Sponsor here.

you pay for what you get, I wouldn't skimp on suspension. Tein, ISC, BC - i would stick with those. I went with BC's and have no issues. Just make sure you do your research before you pull the plug. the Tein Street Basis are entry level ($560) - there is a sale on EndlessRPM.com (Bruce o'shacks/AckTL05 site) - for the Tein coils. I would jump to Advance ($649) or Flex ($930) - at least you can get dampening adjustments. If you get the ISC, or the BC - they come fully assembled - top hats and all. Simply uninstall the old, and install the new - no spring compressor to worry about.
Just depends on what you want to get out the suspension, how you want the ride, harder, softer, close to stock..etc. But like VisualEchos said - research, and go from there.

Street Basis:
TEIN Dampers - Street Basis - Excelerate Performance - Japanese and European Performance Specialists!!
Street Advance:
TEIN Dampers - Street Advance - Excelerate Performance - Japanese and European Performance Specialists!!
The ISCs are another step up in terms of adjustment as you can change spring preload, height, and damping individually. We have sale pricing on these so they're $155 off the normal price. As boosejars said, it's all about your budget and what you're looking to do with the car. You can PM me if you have any questions about about price or coilover details.

Some new information as to what current coil overs do for our cars would be good, seems like all the coil over threads are from 2010. A lot has changed since then.
Here is my current experience with Function and Form type 1.
I drive an O8 TLS automatic
wheels are 17x9 +22 rpf1 with 245/45/17 tires
I installed them around 5/10/15. If I were to be asked if I recommend these coil overs to another member, I would personally say stay away from them. My reasoning is my car has about half an inch gap up front and an inch at the rear. I understand that my wheel set up is really aggressive, but these coil overs are just way too soft. They compress and float too much. I was expecting them to at least give my car better handling than OE set up. The coil overs come with spring rates of F12k R6k.
I am seriously considering going back to my stock shocks and springs to drive my car the way I want to drive it. I hate hearing it scrape my fenders over every small road imperfection. Just to let you guys know, yes my fenders and quarters are rolled.

I even called up Function form to question them about their testing on these shocks and it didn't seem like the customer service rep knew much.

Check out endlessrpm.com - that is AckTL05's (Bruce O'Shack) website - still has some good deals on coils. Alexx Kings at tunergoods.com for BC's, Or even reach out to Excelerate Rep to talk to him about the ISC. Some people have good experiences with F&F, but i've heard alot more with issues - blown shocks, poor customer service..etc..
good luck brotha

Does teins basic ride like stocks? Just trying to cover some wheel gap here and replace the old worn shocks. Does the teins basics come with the same damper spec as oem? I don't have time for adjustment with the street advance.

Most of the feedback I've gotten on the TEIN Street Basis has been very positive. They're a great setup if you're looking for a comfort oriented system for daily driving. They're not quite as soft as oem, but they are very comfortable from the reviews I've seen. As with the Street Advance, they retain the rubber upper mounts which helps keep the ride comfortable. The Street Basis don't have the adjustable damping either, so they're a simple "install and forget" system that don't require specific or complicated adjustments.
Spending the extra cash on a BC or ISC system sounds like it would be overkill for your needs. If you're just looking to remove some wheel gap and replace the oem components, I'd stick with the Basis or Advance.

If you get the BC Racing coilovers, just ask for the 6/4 spring-rates and you'll be good. I got the standard 12/6, and could live with them, but they're much stronger than stock, and since I'm not slamming the car, the 6/4 rates will be much better.

Tom is awesome to do business with. I ordered the Tein Street Advance setup from Excelerate a few weeks ago and could not be happier with the product and the service. Great company up there and quick shipping!

Got my Teins a couple years ago from XLR8 as well, was very happy with them and the price was better than anyone else.
I just bought a second set of them used for my current car. The negative thing to keep in mind about Teins is that you'll have to transfer your tophats over from your stock suspension. That means compressing the springs and slowly decompressing them with the tool (can borrow it for free from advanced auto parts).
ISC however include top hats so you can just throw them on, no compressing springs or anything.
Goodluck!

I've heard great things about KW V1's. Once I figure out what I want to do I'll likely get them. They're costly but superior in quality and function (for my needs) to all others mentioned. The V1's are the only KW line available for the 3rd gen and they don't have dampening adjustment but do have a 2" height adj.
Edit: FWIW, I read somewhere that the V1's are KW tuned Konis with KW springs...
