The EL-42s Are Back

Greetings,

I just picked up my '05 TL today and love it. One thing that surprised me is the EL-42s. I thought they had replaced these with something more durable for the '05 model year. Apparently not. My salesman told me that Bridgestone upgraded the belt and used a different composite for the tread. Is this true? I've not heard of this before.

They never actually left. On the 05s, the navi models got the Michelins and the non-navi retained the Bridgestone EL 42s. Bridgestone did reformulate the EL42s in early 2004, but such effort did very little to improve the tires. They are still junk and will flatspot and hydroplane. Sorry to be the messenger of bad news.

Simple way to check: look at the DOT Spec on your tire and it should read OB6N TU2, 0604 or after. These were the reformulated tires Acura used last year. This is the thread for reference. Whether or not they were modified again, those numbers would change and I couldn't ell you what they would be. Hope this helps you out. BTW, the Navi equipped TL have Michelins.

Thanks for the update. My misunderstanding. Oh well, what can you do. At least I know now that they're prone to hydroplane instead of learning the first time it rains.

I have had good experience with the updated Bridgestone EL42's. I have driven more than 4000 miles on them and am close to the 1 year mark. I live outside of Philadelphia and our weather varies from 100 degrees Farenheit in the worst of Summer to below 0. No flatspotting, no vibrations, no trouble with rain, no trouble with snow.

Mine say OB6N TU2, 1405. Not to beat a dead horse, but what does the last four digits represent?

Those digits show the week and year your tire was manufactured.

So 1405 means your tire was manufactured during the 14th week of 2005.

My EL42's just failed NC inspection. I got 27K on them though, so I guess it wasn't too bad. Gonna have to wait another week for the PZeros to be delivered.

there are alot of complaints about these tires while i really didn't have much problems with mine. i have 21K miles on them and there is still tread life left on them. i have driven them through snow storms and they were pretty decent. i didn't initially notice flat spotting when i first got the car but now i rarely feel it. my car sits there all week and i only use it for the weekend now and i don't experience flat spotting. i know it is alot warmer now so it might not be an issue. these tires will probably last me the rest of the year as i do so little driving now.

That's bben my experience so far. Got my TL in late march and checked the tread numbers. Apparently the newer Tirenza's don't seem to have any of the probs.

I've had my TL for 7 months now and not once have my tires uttered a word...not one word. I really feel cheated now!
