Dirty, crusty wheels

What would you guys recommend in cleaning wheels with heavy amount of dust and what looks like road tar? Any special type of brush you guys like using?

Getting ready to do a full detail since the snow is gone and I haven't really washed the wheels all winter.

That's what you get for not washing the wheels all winter.Salt pitting and discoloration for the win! Try some good aluminum polish and a buffing wheel.

I use this to polish aluminum/metal: P21S Metal Polishing Soap - 10.5 oz | Free Shipping Available - Detailed Image

Really good stuff. Just do a test spot first to make sure it does not damage the aluminum on the wheels (assuming that's aluminum).

I'd probably hit the wheels with some Sonax Full Effect Wheel cleaner or CarPro IronX first to help break down any brake dust/iron contamination on the wheels.

Try a rim cleaner first before you go polishing like a mad man.

I second the use of Sonax Full Effect Wheel cleaner. I can't think of anything better.
