Can't believe I have rubbing

Just got my Momo Quasar 2's with Michelin Pilot XGT H4. The Momo's are 17X7 with +45 offset, and the tires are 215/50/17 and with two people in the back I get rubbing on the rear driver's side tire. What is really strange is that I haven't had any rubbing at all even when I put the largest (ie heaviest) passengers on the passenger side of the rear seat.

Before I do anything, I was wondering how I get rid of the rubbing? I think I can see the cause, that is, the plastic tab of the bumper that is in the wheel well. I think it is the one that is at the top of the rear wheel well. Can anyone confirm this for me. And second, should I get a file and file the tab down? Many thanks guys.

Nice Wheels! Show us a picture of your car w/ the wheels on! Yeah, how much do they cost?

Regarding the rubbing, there have been lots of posts before on this issue. Apparently there's a little plastic tab in the right rear fender that can be trimmed. According to other TL posters, trimming this should solve your problem.

I got lucky with the purchase of these wheels and tires because a good buddy of mine has an auto supplies company in Newfoundland and he purchases wheels from a place in Toronto. He aggreed to get me the wheels at cost. Thus the Momos cost me $360 a wheel which I think is pretty good for these wheels.

I don't know the weight of these wheels, couldn't find that anywhere and I forgot to ask.

Regarding the rubbing with the 235/45/17 tires. Firstly, I'm not sure what the width and offset of the Momo sports are, but if I remember from when I was looking for wheels, I think that they are 17X8 with a 42 offset. If this is the case, you will get rubbing from that combo of low offset and wide wheel. Just my guess.

Toranto TL,

Are you sure they are +45 offset. That is very strange especially it only rubs on the rear driver side.

I have +42 offset with 235-40-18's and it use to rub only when I go over dip or big bumps. Now it doen't since I got my fenders trimed. You are right about the plastic tap that is causing the rub.

Here are few thing you can try to do.

1. Double check and make sure that the MOMO's are +45 offset.
When I was buying my rims, I think the sales person told me that
MOMO's don't make +45 offset. ( I could be wrong)

2. Check the springs on your car. Especially the rear driver side.
Make sure its not tweeked.

3. Take you car to a place where they sell rims and get the rear fender trimed. They should have a machine that trims the fender. I got mine done and it took about 15 min. Very easy job and it looks clean.

I hope this helps.

Jax,

3 important points.

1. You can use 235-45-17 tires but just make sure you buy rims with correct offsets.

2. I would go with at least +45 offset (maybe +42 offset like me if you are willing to trim the fender)

3. I would not go more than 7.5 inchs on rim width unless you got
a real HIGH offset on 8 inch width (+52 offset or more to be on safe side).

I hope this helps.

Seems odd that they would rub.

215/15/17 has a total diameter of 25.46 inches.

The Stock 205/60/16 are 25.685 inches.

Is it a constant rub or only over bumps and stuff?

I know of guys who've put 235/45/17 on a lowered suspension who have no rubbing.

Is it possible that the TL suspension is soft to the point where having two passengers lowers too much? I have my doubts but I can't see any other explaination (except maybe the offset).

Thanks for all the good advice guys. I think, I'm not 100 % sure though, that the rubbing, which only occurs with two or more passengers in the back seat and going over bumps, is only occuring on the driver's side rear wheel because the leading edge of the bumper in the wheel well on that side protrudes inwards a bit more than on the passenger side. Thus, when going over bumps and the wheel and tire come upwards it rubs while on the passenger side the leading edge of the bumper is more flush and the tires hasn't rubbed yet. I checked with the wheel supplier and they confirmed that the wheel is a +45 offset.

Do you guys think it is okay to just file the plaste tab down with a file?

I'll post a pic of the wheel on my TL when I get a friend over with a digit camera hopefully this weekend.

I have the same problem with my 18'' Konigs. When I have 3 people in the back it rubs on the rear drivers side. Even a few times i have been in the car by myself and hit a big dip in the road while bearing right and i heard it rub slightly. I will be taking a look into shaving off that plastic piece because that seems like the only explanation if its only on one side of the car. We'll see......

Rubbing

Do you guys think, since I have a 02'TL Type-S, having a stiffier Suspension... I might NOT have problems with 18" wheels, 225/40 tires with high offset? I don't really want to do a lot to the car... for now. But I do want to get 18" wheels for it, AND the wheel I had decided on is the MOMO Quasar 2. Any suggestions out there? It seems like a lot of these wheel/tire shops just want to get you to buy... and worry about complications later. And the thought of filing anything on my car is out of the question.

I was just like you. I thought trimming the fender was out of the question, but its not bad at all. It looks very clean if you get it done correctly. You can't even see it. If you tuck under and looked at it, it looks natural. When my brother looked at it, he asked me which area was trimmed because it looked so clean. Like I said its a very minor job.

Don't be afraid

Thanks, ssk

Hey, I used to live in your area (Artesia).... I live in South Orange County now... and all the wheels shops around here are kinda expensive... do you have any recommendations? Do you have any pics of your car with the M5s? I was thinking abou the M6s (2nd choice after the MOMOs Quasar 2s). Niche Bella 2pc is also another... Anyone else out there with opinions, please feel free to reply...

thanks
