Bizarre 2006 TL change

Has anyone else noticed that the 2006 TL wheels have a larger "cutout" around the air cap?

I believe that is for the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) which is new for 2006.

The question I have is can we install aftermarket rims on the new 2006's and keep the TPMS?

I think one of the members here asked their dealership/tech, and their response was that the factory TPMS won't work with most aftermarket rims... even A-Spec rims if I remember correctly.

That's one hell of a cutout.. Why they need that much for TPMS. MY G doesn't.. I guess it is going to make it tougher to get aftermarket rims...?

The "cutout" is possibly there to facilitate the extra weight of the TPMS stem/module. I have yet to see an 06 up close.

Anyone have pics of the rim?

I think there is an A-spec rim with the TPMS stem on it, runs more than the others for our 04-05 models. Minimal though. I seem to remember seeing it in the A of E parts store on ebay - but it is down right now until the 31st for rework or something.

I would assume that finding aftermarket rims which will accomodate TPMS will only be difficult for the short term. More and more auto manufacturers are including TPMS as an option, and I would expect aftermarket wheel companies are taking note.

In a year or so (I'm speculating here), there should be many more "TPMS-friendly" aftermarket wheels on the market if wheel manufacturers want to remain "in the game"

Just my though

Think of it this way: the TL stockies are pretty nice to begin with. At least we're not looking for aftermarket wheels to replace steelies w/ hub caps! I would be in much more of a hurry if that were the case.

Nice. I'll probably wait a year or two to get some new rims and hopefully there will be a bigger selection that will be compatible with the TPMS. I really like the look of the Axis Mesh rims.

What's this going to mean if we 04/05 folks curb rash or bend a rim badly a year or two from now? Are we going to have to find 04/05 replacements on eBay if we don't want rims with different cut-outs on the car ? The cutout may look minor to some but I think it really changes the rim enough that I'd be bummed if that was all I could get for a replacement. I like the 04/05 rims.

My Chrome A-Spec (or what they are now calling the accessory wheel) does not have a cut out. This makes me wonder why they needed to do this cut out stuff on the original wheel.

So as was mentioned before, having the sensor means added weight that is lop-sided. So they cut into the rim to take material out and rebalance the weight distribution. I I thought they could have just added a counter-weight on the inside of the rim and left the ouside of the rim alone...but that's just my

See the Canada Acura FAQ regarding TPMS. Scroll down to Section 6 for TPMS.
