Avon Tech M550 A/S
I just purchased a set of these and will report how they are after I've had them on for a little while. They are very reasonable ($104 @ tirerack) and tested very well. I haven't found many owner reviews of them though, anybody have these and can comment on performance (dry, rain, snow)?
thanks,
Dlev

As far as I can remember (way back) Avon used to supply tires to a variety of English marques. They used to make a tire that has "two tires", like a duallie tire of some sort, for use in passenger cars. Road and Track did a test on them and they performed excellent in the wet.
Keep us posted in your findings, though.

wanted to post my experiences with these tires.
just went away for the weekend (120 miles each way) and experienced dry as well as heavy rain conditions. The tires are great compared to the EL-42's. Dry handling provides much better feel of the road and at highway speeds holds your line much better than the EL-42's, which I felt had a little mind of their own and required minor stearing wheel adjustments too often while on the highway. These Avon's stick like glue and have a great feel of the road, this does give a slightly firmer ride, but I like that. I also noticed a big difference in cornering at high speeds. I had noticed with EL-42's when i pushed the car on an on ramp i would have to watch out for a sudden oversteer bite, I thought this was the car, but now realize it was the tires because the Avon's hold their path much better around curves. The major improvement though was in the rain. As many have described I had major problems with hydroplanning in the EL-42's, I didn't feel comfortable above 55mph in a heavy rain due to so much hydroplanning. We'll on the highway at 70-75 mph in heavy rain I never felt the Avon's hydroplane once, you would feel them hit the standing water at times but maintain complete traction and no tire spin. They are really impressive in the rain. Overall, I feel like I have a new car, and am very psyched about the purchase. If you still have the EL-42's I advise swapping them out, major improvement to the handling of the TL in dry and rain. I don't hany snow experience yet with the Avons, but the tread looks like they will handle fine.

New Avons
I just got a set myself (the Bridgestone's were done at 22K miles). I wanted to try the Pirelli PZero Neros everyone likes, but Tire Rack said that they are hard to come by right now. He recommended the Avons, said they were the closest to the Pirellis. They were also only $104/tire, cheaper than the Pirellis.
Result - I like the feel very much. We've had rain in SoCal and they have been no problem at all, nice on cornering, and I find them somewhat quieter than the EL-42s.

Avons in the snow
I can now report on these tires in light snow and also slushy conditions. Excellent traction in both, felt like I had a set of snow tires on. Didn't even need to start in 2nd when I was on a hill, was able to just drive the car as I normally do.
