Another Lug Nut Question...

I am getting a little confused on the whole lug nut issue. Can someone please clarify if any aftermarket lug nuts work on the stock rims?

I would get the OEM again, but they are rusting, so why purchase again??

If the OEM are made by McGard and they are rusting, why wouldn't the replacement McGard's also rust. This is for a 2004 TL.

Can I get Splinegard McGards or something else? I want a locking lug nut with my set.

Thanks.

I have the spline drive mcgards for use with my Work Wheels. The spline drives are much narrower than regular lugs... (They are the same size as "tuner lugs"). Not sure if they work with OEM wheels... I thought they didn't, which is why I have a bag of 5 oem acorn lugs in the trunk for when I put the spare on... If they work, I guess I don't need to carry those spare lugs around...

The stock wheels have ball/spherical nuts and most aftermarket have conical nuts.. just make sure you get the right ones.

I understand the the ball vs conical lug nut. My confusion is whether McGard or anyone else has a better, longer lasting solution that are compatible with the OEM rims, since my factory lugs have been rusting for over a year.

I am getting remanufactured OEM rims and I want to get new lug nuts at the same time.

Thanks.

Not sure why your lugs are rusting... Even the lugs on my other car that is 12 years old, and is parked outside in the rain/snow/etc, does not have lugs that are rusting...

But anyways, according to their website, you should be able to use part number 64012 on the OEM TL wheels. These should not rust, as I've never had any problems with rusting on aftermarket McGard lugs...

It says you can use part number 65357 for the spline drives too... I have the Black Chrome Spline Drives on my G, so I knwo the spline drives are basically tuner lugs (as only tuner lugs fit my Work Wheels), so they might be too narrow for the OEM wheels, as far as asthetics go, but it's up to you.

I am not finding that part number. It does not come up in the search. Also, I can only find "cone" style lugs.

I found it. I wonder why it is not coming up in the search function.

Specifically says "not for use on OEM wheels". This is for the bulge cone seat.

Does this mean I have to go to the stealer?

Yes aftermarket lugs works on stock rims. Rays are the way to go but if you are on a budget check out Muteki. They are nice

I forgot to check the footnotes. So I guess I was right by having the bag of oem lugs in my trunk....

Aftermarket lugs will NOT work well on OEM wheels. The wheels will be loose and the lugs will NOT seat properly. This is NOT recommended.

Aftermarket lugs will work with OE wheels as long as they are ball seat.

OP, all you need are 12x1.5 ball seat lugs. I purchased a set of black ones for my stock wheels on my Prelude that I use during winter. Here's some I found with a quick eBay search. I'm sure there are plenty more out there.

These ones are actually made by Gorillas specifically for Honda OE wheels:

Are Gorilla Lug Nuts Any Good?

Are they any better with regard to finish than the OE lugs?

My OEM locking lug nut is rusting on every rim and the other lugs are beginning to show signs of rust as well.

Probably not, but they are cheaper to replace when they do rust. Unfortunately, it seems that Honda's overall quality has really gone down over the last decade. The older lugs don't deteriorate nearly as quickly as the newer ones do. Wheels are the same way. The clearcoat finish on our 2007 TL wheels is already starting to peel. I've seen 15 year old Honda alloy wheels that still have nearly perfect clearcoat on them. Kinda sad.

I have had the same problem with rusting on my 2004 TL's lugs. Not dramatic, but slight rusting.

But I have another question regarding the replacement lugs. I don't want anything fancy - just replacements. And I don't want the lock nut - just regular ones. I found several websites that have them but one actually lists a 25mm and a 30mm 12x1.5. Do you guys know which is correct?
