225/55/16 RE950's BIG MISTAKE

After hours of research on this site, with Acura, and with Bridgestone, i popped a new set of 225/55/16 RE950's on the car. so heres the story.

I get them installed, and drive off. In short, ive been back 4 times to get them balanced. Finally after road force balance, its a little better, but not much.

The tires, although everyone here and Bridgesont says they will work fine, are eating themselves alive. They are feathering and wearing rapidly. Their just too wide for the rim. I tottaly regret these tires. I just should have got the 215/55 Kumho 712's like i wanted to. The worst part is, the RE950's dont even perform that great. But they are great for rain. Their like "what water?".

So anyone have any suggestions for me? anyone have this problem and find a solution? the car is bone stock and this should have worked fine but its not. its terrible. please kill me.

Feathering is normally associated with worn out tie rods or improperly adjusted toe in/out. You may want to have your front end checked out.

I don't see that type of problem with my Yoko ES100's and it has been over 3 months since I had them on.

No, they're not. Check any tire manufacturer's recommendations for approved rim width.

The worst part is, the RE950's dont even perform that great.
As opposed to what else? The stock tires? Mine offer considerably more stick than the Michelins. Before them, I had Goodyear Eagle RSA in 215/55. The Goodyears were noticeably shorter than stock, affected the speedo calibration and did not offer the same cornering capability.

I have just over 7,000 miles on my RE950s. Using a tire depth gauge, I measured both the inside and outside part of the tread on the fronts. Both are just a tad over 8/32".

You must have a problem elsewhere.

Sparky57 I see you have the RE950 mounted on the original factory wheel. I am looking some replacement tires for my 2000TL I have the optional factory multi spoke chrome wheel for my car.
I was just wondering what tires would fit on my wheels I did not wan't to buy new wheels again or go up to 17inch wheels. This tire rates #1 in the High Performace All Season Survey for Tire Rack. I wan't something better than the stock Michelin MXV4 that I have now. The car just hit the 36,000 mile mark yesterday & I use winter tires in the winter. I just need to start looking for replacements. So my question is for sparky57 or anybody else with some info. What size tire would I get if I stick with the factory 16inch wheel & go with the RE950??

sounds like your car has a problem, not the tires. a lot of people have that size w/o probs including myself.
im not even considering anything other than 225/55

Question

Please explain....

What advantage is there to getting 225/55/16 size tires or other over stock 205/60/16? Isn't stock the optimum formulation? How is the ride affected?
I am not a street racer, only a commuter.
Thanks.

Describe to us your interpretation of "feathering". Describe the physical apprearance of your tires.

While I wouldn't consider myself a street racer, I do value cornering. While the stock Michelins are quiet, their cornering ability is quite limited. They will squeal at the least provocation. A wider tire such as the 225/55 will give up some mileage and the RE950 compound is somewhat noisier than stock with it's more agressive tread pattern.

If you're happy with the stock tires, I'd stick with them.

If you want the best performance, the 225/55 size is the closest fit to the original 205/60. The diameter is virtually the same, unlike the 215/55 and 225/50 so your speedometer calibration will be unaffected. There is absolutely no rubbing despite Tire Rack's concern that this size is not "approved" by them. If you follow the "sticky" survey as to tire size use by folks here, you will find quite a few using 225/55.

Back in 99 or 2000 MOTOR TREND or CAR & DRIVER did a test on the TL. They said the car needed more agressive tires than the stock Michelin MXV4. They said it would handle & even brake better.
