225 55 16 comments

I see several of us have upgraded to the Yokohama ES100's in the 225 55 16 size in lieu of stock size.

I have the Yokes on my MR2 Spyder so I know they are great performers. Any problems with noise - the Spyder has no insulation, so they are a bit loud.

Also - anyone have any rubbing problems with stock suspension. Any comments would be appreciated. 36,000 mile and the stock tires are wasted.

36,000 aint bad at all for thoes tires... its very good actually.... i only got 30,000 out of my RE950's and their 400 tread life

But 225/55/16 works great on TL's, no rubbing ever, and ive seen people go even bigger than that, just not on factory wheels...

I just upgraded the tires to 225 55 16s. Much improved in the handling, tires don't make noise going through turns. No problems with rubbing. But depending on where you purchase & install, they will probably ask you if this is the right size, since it's much different than stock.

I've heard there's U-turn rubbing on 225/55 when your car is lowered at least to 1.5-2"

jgatortl,
I go for tire durability. That means the tires having the most plies on the tread/sidewall area having the best chances of surviving a road hazard.
I have just replaced mine after 49,000 miles w a Goodyear Eagle GT+4
w 6ply tread & 2 ply sidewall. So far am happy with it.
Do your best research and you'll be fine.

I just installed some BFG KDWS in 225/55/16 on my CL. I was ready to get the ES100's but then there was a price drop on the BFG's so they were only $5. more per tire. And I figured the 400 wear rating plus all weather for the occasional one or two days of snow we get was worth it. The reviews on tirerack seemed fine so I went with them. Only have maybe 100 miles on them so far, so I can't comment too much. But it has transformed the car from squealing like a pig w/ hardly any grip to relative silence and much better grip. No rubbing either.
