2008 TL-S - 19s vs 20s - My Experience
I originally posted about a month ago as I had purchased 20" rims w/ 35 series tires and was having issues with them rubbing quite a bit on my 2008 TL-S. I had an 04 TL originally with 20s & 245/35 tires and had no issues whatsoever with rubbing. I figured I would just take these rims and put them on my new 08 TL-S. Of course nothing ever works out just that easy. I knew the Type S had different brakes calipers (Brembo) in the front but I had no idea that this would make my rims from my 04 not fit. Well I found this out when I took them to Les Schwab to have them mounted and was told there is no way these rims will work. I was disappointed but I wanted rims, so I decided I would just purchase new 20" rims with a different offset that would clear the Brembo brakes (This is what Les Schwab suggested) I decided on the Verde Avatar rims (see pic) with 245/35 series tires. The rims were 10mm offset & this cleared the Brembo brakes in the front but now caused the rims/tires to stick out slightly. This cause SEVERE rubbing in the back two tires. Every little bump (with no one in the car) would cause rubbing. I rolled on this setup for only 2 days and the paint underneath the wheelwell began to chip. I was not happy and went back to Les Schwab and was told i had two choices: 1) Go with a 30 series tire (another $400) or go with a different offset on the rear 2 wheels. Well I decided on the 30 series tires as I wanted to be able to rotate the tires. I still had the same rubbing issues as before. I would caution anyone who has the 08 Type S who decides to go with a larger rim such as a 20. They do not fit and caused me significant problems. I ultimately returned the rims/tires to Les Schwab and then ordered rims/tires that were guaranteed to fit from tirerack.com. The rims & tire setup I have now are 19" ASA ZR2 (45mm offset) with 225/35 Toyo tires. The overall diameter is exactly the same as stock (25.4") and the rims do not stick out from the wheel well as the 20s did. If anyone is debating between 19s & 20s, I would suggest the 19s from my personal experience above. It was a hassle and I was lucky that Les Schwab let me return the 20s after rolling on them and rubbing the tires so much.

There are a lot of members running on 20's without any problems. Its the offset what matters the most. Most TL's use from 35 + offset to 45+.
BTW your car looks a lot better with the 19's.
