19x8.5 rear 19x8 front

WHat the perfect tire size for these two differnt widths. I want my tires to be rounded not squared off. Lowenhart LD5's 2004 TL

I hope you aren't going to put staggered widths on a front drive car.

1 inch = 25.4 mm

at 8", a 203mm tire to be as wide as the rim. at 8.5", it's 216mm.

these rim widths usually take a 225/235/245. so if you want rounded tire shoulders, you probably want a tire width less than my calculations. you would also want an aspect ratio even smaller than required to pull it off. this will probably translate into speedo reading/abs/mileage inaccuracies.

not sure why you are going this, but that's my $0.02.

THank you for your help I appreciate.

And tell me why I shouldn't stagger widths on a front wheel drive. I have two other cars I've done it on and it looks much better than looking at a side of a car and seeing the same thing.
I can see If the wheels are sticking out of the well.

actually, 04s can take 8.5s (with a lower offset than what is needed on previous models) all the way around but he is opting for a narrower wheel up front. yes it's true the narrower tire will be on the driving wheels (but stocks are 8's anyways) and he cannot rotate, but it's up to him.

mcd314,

Both of the vehicles you have mentioned are rear wheel drive. They are meant to have a wider rear wheel b/c they are rear wheel drive. (I bet the looked good though!) TL's FWD, although it would probably look alright, it just wouldn't make sense.

I ended up with a 245 width tire for the 8.5" wheel all the way around. Anything else didn't "square off" quite enough.

Good luck and show some pictures when you're done!!

Thanks for your help and comments. I probably won't have any pictures for at least two months since I live in Jersey and it's still too cold and snowing all the time but I definatly will.

P.S. I've been told buy a friend who works at a rim store that he has put 20x8 in the front and 20x8.5 in the rear of a 04 TL. I asked if it was rubbing in the front at all. He said with the 20x8 in front with a small tire size he had no problems rubbing when he took it out for a ride. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHT ON THAT?

i have 8" rims.
all the way around.

i think it's way wide for this car.

but it does square up nicely.

getting a new setup is dependent upon your stock setup. the overall diameter of the new one should closely match the stock one and that's to prevent the inaccuracies i mentioned earlier. the reason that guy might be mounting on a "smaller" tire is because the offset is all wrong! if you have the right offset then you can get the right tire size; however, there is a good chance getting 20s means not being able to get the same overall diameter as the stock and therefore having the inaccuracies. on the 04s, i believe an 8.5" wide rim needs at least a +45mm offset (with possibly a 235 tire) to prevent rubbing. i'm pretty sure that guy is slapping on something less than 45 and that's why he is using the smaller tire. basically that is how it goes and since i don't have an 04 and it being pretty new, i'm not well versed on it.

ask the guy for the offset(s) and we'll talk some more!
