Cons for the larger ones are weight, mpg, performance drop. There comes a point where the sidewall becomes too small and it hurts performance also.

+1.

For performance, go 17"-18".

For looks, go 19"+.

19's with a 245/35-19 tire is an excellent combo if looks are more of a priority.

I guess it comes down to looks vs performance. I don't race the TL in a straight line, no point since it's not fast. But I do take corners pretty hard and track it occasionally. So for me, personally I'll take the cornering and slightly better ride along with less unsprung weight of the 17s.

If different wheels weighed the same but had different diameters, would there still be the performance penalty for the larger diameter wheel? I once thought that the shorter the sidewall the better the cornering performance because of less sidewall flex.

What am I missing?

The rotational mass is pushed more toward the outer edge of the wheel, still causing slightly less performance than the comparable 18" wheel. Rims are designed differently, obviously, so in theory you could find a 19" rim that has less rotational mass than a lightweight 18.

the 19's makes a big difference looks wise but 18's are still decent. i know a couple tl's with 20's, thats a little too big in my opinion

What most peeps said. Some people think 19's look better some think 18's looks better. IMO I would go with 18 and nothing bigger... better handling, IMO looks best with the car aka not too big.. and a smoother ride

I went from stock 17" to 18" A-Spec. Now I want a set of 19" Ron Jon Inspyre. If you don't care about performance, go with 19".
