18", 19", 20" or 255/40/17

I have had my 06 TL WDP for almost three years now with 25000 miles on the stock EL42's at 6/32 but traction has been lost. I am interested in getting new wheels and tires but I am at a loss.

I drive my car hard so I really don't think 20's would be the best seeing how it would be a very low profile tire and the fact that I can't find any RPM tire's of 817(everything would make the car one inch taller). If someone can convince me of other wise please let me know. The local tire shop said I could get a set of 20" MSR 093 for $1350, I don't know if this is a good deal though.

So it comes down to the other choices. What I really need to know from all of you is the handling of the car on 18", 19", or the 255/40/17's. The car is all stock and I plan to keep it that way for now.

What say you?

John V.

If you want performance, don't go higher than 18's, but I highly suggest you stay with 17's and try to get lighter rims. If you want to go 255/40/17, make sure you get a rim which is at least 8.5" wide...otherwise you would be losing performance.

Now, if you want "looks", you should go with 19's and stay away from 20's, IMHO.

I personally say that you can stay with 17's and have performanc and looks at the same time: (WedSport SA-70, 17x9 +35 all the way around, wrapped in Falken FK452-255/40/17)

FYI, I voted "18's" for the best balance between performance and looks.

Princelybug,

Did you lower yours at all or is that factory Type-S setup?

Yes stick to 19s. Not too big and not too small...just perfect.

I said 18".

Reason 1) The 18" will give the better ride quality over 19". But the 19" really fill out our wheel wells nicely.
Reason 2) 19" cost $$$$. If you want a good lightweight (or at least not heavier than stock) wheel you will pay for it. Plus tires are more expensive when you get into that low of a profile tire.

For performance, 255/40/17 hands down. There are only positives, no negatives. IMO, anything larger than a 17" on the TL is for looks only. Stock 17X8 works just fine. If you were going aftermarket, it wouldn't hurt to bump it to an 8.5" but I've been running the 255s forever with a nice flat footprint and no abnormal wear.

Just as important or more important is the type of tire you run. Rubber compound can make or break the performance. I would go with the closest to an ultra high performance summer tire your weather will allow you to safely go.
