$500 alignment cost?!?!
$500 alignment cost?!?!
Hey everyone just brought my 07 type s tl into an alignment shop because my rear tires were wearing out extremely fast towards the inside of the tire due to negative camber. He ran the car on the alignment machine and told me what I already knew but then explained to me that he would have to order aftermarket parts both for the rear end and for my front right tire because it also had negative camber. He told me it wasn't adjustable from the factory and that these parts were necessary to fix it. I do not recall exactly what parts he needed but he said the bill would be around $500 after tax!?!?! Any idea if this is a ripoff or not? And are these aftermarket parts necessary? Thanks!
I think he is talking about a camber kit. You dont really need it if your car are not slammed. Please take your car to a different shop. Alignmnet should cost around $80.00.
Well the toe isn't the issue the rear tires are practically bald towards the middle due to negative camber so that is what needs adjusted in order to save the life of future tires...I am going to call the shop tomorrow and see what parts they had to order and then ill see what you guys think
Correct, camber is NOT adjustable on this car.
Don't know wtf you guys are talking about, an alignment should be no more than $60. Maybe it depends on your area.
To correct toe and camber, you will need a camber kit. Ingalls makes a kit for the rear ($180) for both sides and it corrects camber and toe.
For the front, you can choose from Skunk2, SPC and I think one other, search Google for that.
OR, you can go with whatever he orders you.
His $500 bill will most likely include the parts, the labor to install, and an alignment.
If you are not lowered, I would refuse the kits unless he prints you a sheet and the numbers are severely out of whack.
Stock, the TL has some camber issues in the rear, but I've yet to come across someone on here running a camber kit with stock suspension and wheels.
Have him print you a sheet of your current specs.
Also, toe will wear a tire much faster than camber will. You want both as close to 0 as possible (with stock specs).

The car has not been lowered no. I recently bought the car used and just noticed how bad the rear tires are wearing out, so I brought it in and he threw the $500 bill in my face and I was shocked, because going in it was ''supposed'' to cost me $55. I will get the parts info from the shop and post that info here tomorrow to see what u guys think.
as others have said, camber not adjustable on this car in stock form.
That being said, the stock threshold for keeping rear camber in spec is -3.2 degrees. Anything beyond that and you're out of spec. My car is F'ing low for not having a camber kit and I'm right at -3.0 camber in the rear, just barely in spec.
My shop also had no problem aligning my car with that, lol. I paid 150 bucks for corner balancing and alignment and height adjustments.
So you shouldn't be dropping more than like 80 bucks for an alignment. And with stock or even a-spec ride height, there is utterly no need for a camber kit in order to safely keep your car within Acura factory spec for camber in the alignment for the rear.
edit: camber doesn't kill tires. Toe does. anyone who knows dick about suspension knows this, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I think your shop is trying to just pull a few extra bucks out of you.

You can get lifetime alignments at some places for around $150.
And I would not worry about a camber kit at this stage in your setup. Sounds like this guy was trying to reel in a big fish.
Even when I got my first alignment at Goodyear after I lowered mine on springs, the guy said "your camber is a little out of whack, but its not a big deal". He could have tried screwing me but he was honest. Just keep your tires rotated often, and get an alignment once in a while and you will be fine.

Here are the items the shop said they had to order:
1 right upper ball joint: $100
1 right rear camber link: $150
2 hrs labor: $110
1 alignment: $55
I have yet to receive the spec sheet of the alignment but when I do I will post it
