Why does the area around the shifter get so hot?

Hi Folks,

I bought a 2005 Acura TL pre-owned and i've noticed it since day 1. The metal area around the shifter (where it says P-N-R-D-D1-D2 - sorry don't know what it is called) gets pretty hot to the touch - not enough to burn me but still hot.

Is this because the ATF is not doing its job? I got the ATF service done at 50K and now the car is at 60K....so I really shouldn't need another ATF service right? Or is it because that part is made out of metal?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated - thanks
