What could noise be, help?

What could a rattle sound be coming from engine?

I have a 2008 TL auto, that has roughly 99k miles. It's been a while but after I start it every morning it makes a loud rattle sound from engine and even as I drive off it gets louder, the sound is like the noise air compressors work the ones you use to blow air into tires. Ok before I panic or call dealership what could be wrong. I've only done oil changes, tranny service. That's it I haven't replaced spark plugs. Lately I've noticed it kind of wants to shut off on me while making a turn or accelerating. Help

I forgot to mention it only does this after every new startup day, once car gets going after like 10 min it will stop.

does it only happen after you start it when it's cold and happens for like 1 min then when the engine is warmed up it stops? if so, I think I know what it is.

Hey paperboy yes it ONLY does it every morning when engine is cold, then if I'm in hurry and drive off the noise becomes louder as I accelerate, but after like 10 min once car gets normal it goes away. I'm worried because this is my only car and I use of for work.

The timing belt tensioner can fail and do what you are describing. Rattles like mad and sounds like a diesel. Quiet once it runs a few minutes. If handy, pull the front timing belt core and rotate the motor to tdc. If the crank lines up but the cam is off, time for a timing belt and new tensioner.

There is no leaks of any kind, no burning oil just that sound every time engine is cold,.
If it ends up being the tensioner, does that come with the timing belt and water pump package or do I buy it seprate

The tensioner could fail completely and do bigger damage. Can you get anybody to help check it?

Check our Texas regional section. I live in SA at the moment and a bunch of AZ members are having a TX meet Dec. 1 make sure to come.

Uhm, I would help if I was confident of what I was helping you with.

Check Real Tech collision off Bandera and Grissom. Owned by a couple and they are very honest and good at what they do.

My guess is either auto tensioner or the j pipe. The tensioner is for the serpentine belt not the timing belt, completely different. And you might be like wth jpipe? But I actually had this same problem with my jpipe innards rattling before only when it's cold. Gave it a few taps with the hammer and it hasn't come back since. In your case more likely the tensioner than the jpipe but I would need to hear it for myself.

sorry about digging up an old thread but my car just started to develop this symptom and I did a search with this as a result. I have a RV6 v3 jpipe and I get that loud air leaking/knocking noise the first 20 seconds I start the car when the engine is cold. It goes away once the engine gets slightly warmed up, but that noise is very slightly noticable when I accelerate hard at low rpm's. Almost sounds like I have a hole in my exhaust. My car is at 106000km so it's also due for a timing belt change soon which might be contributing to the problem but I want to make sure that it's not the J-pipe first before I do a pre-mature timing belt change.

@Paperboy: where did you hit the jpipe to fix the problem?
