Vibrations in steering wheel! AHH.

Hey all, I have a 2005 TL 6MT (love the thing so fucking much) with 133k miles on it. Recently I have experienced vibrations in the steering wheel while braking at 60+ mph and ONLY 60+ mph...otherwise nothing. I am completely perplexed. Would warped rotors only present themselves during high speed, soft, braking? Also a side note I checked the two front wheels and noticed I don't have any wheel weights on either wheel. Now I know I should probably look into a rebalance, but again would unbalanced wheels/tires only present themselves during high speed braking? I've tried braking all while in gear and in neutral so I've kind of ruled out the tranny. Any thoughts??

I ordered new brakes just in case and because performance brakes why not lol. Thanks all! -Chase

I'm guessing wheel balance or warped rotors.

Warped rotors are the mostly likely cause, usually from over tightening of the lug nuts by an impact gun. They're only supposed to be tightened to 80 ft-lbs.

Agree with DMC that it's most likely warped rotors. My 05 MT was suffering the exact same thing ... high speed vibration on braking. Generally just like you said >60mph. I replaced the rotors and pads (front and back) and all is very smooth now. I actually also took DMC's recommendation for what he's been happy with regarding replacements. That is Centric 125.40062 / Wagner MX1049 (front) and Centric 125.40061 / Wagner QC536 (rear). Far cheaper than OE and for my daily commuting to/fro work in a 12+ year old car they are perfect !

If you are doing the work yourself read up on issues some folks have had with the front calipers and getting the caliper holding bolts out. All four of my caliper bolts came out with zero issue but many others not so lucky. In my case it wasn't torque since I always torque my own lugs or go places that pay attention to that. It all started after washing the car on a Friday and then parking it until Monday morning. It fused the pads to the rotors so badly that the vibration never went away and actually got worse over the years until I said " eFF -it! I don't care if the front caliper bolts could be a disaster". I now always warm up the brakes after washing to avoid that.
