Vibrating at 65mph +

Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone else was having this problem. My car is relatively new (14,400mi). I had a RWD car before, so I'm not too sure if FWD cars are just a little more rough than RWD.

But the car is smooth as glass when driving to about 50-55mpg, then it starts shaking at about 65mph, its not too bad but its definitely noticable. The car doesn't really pull to one side or another. But I plan on taking the car in to get the tires, rotated, balanced and possibly re aligned.

Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what it could be?

Thanks!

But actually I have an 05, so i'm not sure if this would be the case, does anyone know if this bulletin applies to 05s as well?

ecliptics:
Its not vibrating out of control but its definitely notciable. I've driven other TLs at highway speeds and it was not this noticable before hand.

i have the same thing on my acura wich is 2005. I even upgraded to new wheels new 18 tires and balanced but did not do the alignment yet but it does not pull to either side and i do have the same thing happening....wich does bother a lot when u drive on longer trips. I had a pontiac g6 as a rental once and it was really refreshing driving that car since it was so smooth on highway or street.

My '08 has a mild, yet annoying vibration starting around the same speed that the dealer can't get rid of. They are now telling me its a normal characteristic of the car. I have driven other TL's that don't have the problem. Try getting a road force balance...it helped mine but didn't completely get rid of the vibration.

I would make sure the tires are inspected when you get the balance/alignment. I would also check or ask them to check your wheel/susp components for end play. For example an outer tie rod end could be going bad, which could vibrate slightly at higher speeds and be felt in the steering wheel.

Well, I did end up getting my tires rotated and balanced. The tire shop said there was a slight bend in one of my front wheels that they placed in the back.

This helped out the vibration a little bit, but I don't think this cured it totally, my car is Certified Preowned (ive had the car now fro about 2 months) would this be something do you guys think would be covered under warranty?

A bent wheel WILL NOT be covered under warranty. Its not a problem with the wheel itself, its Driver error caused by hitting a curb or pothole.. Depending on what type of wheels you have (aspec or stock), you can get them either repaired or by used ones in the Black market section.

This post scares me! I've owned Acuras since 1999 ('97 Integra GS, '05 TSX A-spec, '08 TL Type-S) and just got my TL Type-S 2 weeks ago. Between 65 and 85, the steering wheel shakes in my hand, and right at 75 it feels like the steering wheel will jump out the window. After 1 week of ownership, it was in the shop for a wheel balancing. Now after the second week, it is going back again. They tried to tell me it sat on the lot too long and the tires had "flat spots" that I needed to "drive out". After 1200 miles, I am extremely disappointed and frustrated. Why is the newest/most expensive Acura the worst one I've had so far?! Any insight/suggestions would be great. Stay tuned for more...

I agree,

This is very frustrating, I don't do much highway driving, but this car still should drive as smooth as glass on the highway.

I am waiting when my car needs to be serviced to take it in and see what the dealer has to say along with some other recalls.

But if anyone has any other ideas or even has the same kind of problem I would like to hear about it.

Thanks

Got it road force balanced.. got rid of ~80% of it.. it's still there but it's far more tolerable.
I'm interested to see if it disappears when the snow tires get put on.

its such an irritating problem(2007 tl-s)

i got new wheels and tires...i had to get a spacer on the front(to clear bbk) and change the wheel lugs(10 mm spacer), it is a heavy duty custom made spacer...my steering is fine up till abt 50-55mph and then it goes nuts...

mine is noticable, it feels like the front end of the car is shaking...

my last resort after geting balanced and aligned 4 times is getting it balanced on the car...(dealer recommended some place that high speed balances on the car, not sure if that is what you guys refer to as road force balance????)

IF THAT DOES NOT WORK...i will be sending my wheels back tot he guy who sold them to me for an exchange for ones that fit on the car and clear the brakes without spacers...

im hoping it isnt the tires cause i got those brand new...but acording to the dealer when they high speed balance at this one place they also shave the tire to make it 100% round...in case the tires are uneven...

im tired of this...i cant even test out my tires at 80+mph cause i feel like its bad when the car is shaking so much...

When you get WHEEL BALANCING DONE PLEASE MAKE SURE the shop uses a HUNTER ROAD FORCE MACHINE! Trust me I didnt think it makes a difference but it does. I had the same problem and I got it rebalanced over and over again and the problem continued and they told me my rims are bent.

Then I saw a thread here and took its advice got the balancing done again using HUNTER ROAD FORCE and bam! PROBLEM SOLVED!! So not all "HIGH SPEED BALANCING" is the same.

Go to this site: http://www.gsp9700.com/ and find a location near you and get it done. That's what I did.

yea, always use a shop that uses a hunter machine for balancing and alignments. vibration in the steering wheel means that the front wheels need to be balanced. vibration in the center console means that the rears need to be balanced. if your car's alignment is bad i don't think that would be the cause of vibration, although u should get an alignment if u just dropped your car or if u hadn't had one in over a year.

if one of your wheels is bent, pay a shop $100 to fix it. it's not gonna help just adding weights to counterbalance the bend. if u get the wheels balanced and it doesn't help, u could at least try taking it to another shop to get a second spin to see if it is balanced on 2 different machines.

all tl's should ride smooth as glass on the highway. i've had mine up to 100 once and it was still smooth, in terms of no vibrations.

I got mine done at Discount Tire Co, I believe all their stores use Road Force Balance machines, and to my knowledge those are the only balancers they use.

But I will definitely call around and look into how much it would cost to fix a bent wheel (even though the guy at the tire place said the bent wasn't bad and that it should still drive fine after the balancing.)

I just took my car back out for a spin.

The car seems to be driving alot better after the re balance, there is a slight vibration, sometimes not noticable (probably due to the "bent rim").

But things are atleast looking better.

I didn't see this posted but do you have hubcentric rings for your wheels? If not that is something that could possibly be causing vibrations when you are driving at certain speeds. Also what lug nuts are you using? Hopefully you aren't using the stock ones cause if you are that would definately cause vibration at higher speeds. I also highly suggest the road force balancing but it seems like you already got that and didn't fix the problem all the way.

:agreed:

When I got my first set of wheels mounted to the car, they did not install hub rings, and was rolling on stock lug nuts. Got it road force balanced, still didnt work. THEN got hub rings and the proper lug nuts, was good to go!!!

Hmm also forgot to add maybe the spacers could have something to do with your vibrations highly doubtful but its a possiblity, or from the changing of the wheel lugs.

Man, today i drove on the freeway for 15min, and this time when i read this i paid attention to the steering wheel, brakes, gas pedal, for any vibration. And i all i can say is, that it was so smooth didn't even feel the road, it was so smooth. U guys have really messed up, cars or the roads, have little ripples in them. Cuz when i was driving, they just built the new road, they didn't apply the cement perfect, and it was vibrating. Most of the time it's the road, or u guys are to picky.

My 08 Type S isn't nearly as smooth as it should be. Count me in for the disappointed group. Fan noises and vibrations, rear bumpers that aren't mounted correctly, road vibrations, choppy suspension, inconsistent tranny shits and poor MPG. The only saving grace is that it's a 2 year lease that I got for $33.5k. Should have gone with the CTS.

to OP....from 30-55mph its usually an unbalanced rim from 60-85mph its a bent rim usually. rare occasions it can be a bad tire. i had a bad shaking too but it was from the motor mounts. im not getting into what was busted but it was bad. so id check those out too as a preventative measure.

Follow-up to my 8/19 Post

So my '08 TL Types-S was in the shop for another 2-days (it's second visit in 3 weeks), but it is much better now. The Acura dealer apparently did 3 road-force balancing jobs before throwing away one of the tires. The car still has a very slight wiggle in the steering wheel between 65 and 85, but nothing like what it was before.

have the rim checked, not at the dealer but at a place that specializes in bent rims....or u can lift the car on a jack and spin one rim at a time, fix ur eye on one spot and see if its bent...the rims we have loooove to bend on the inside.

I have the same problem. First dealer told me to have the dampers installed to the subframe. Did that $250 later problem is not fixed. Went to another mechanic told me two of my motor mounts were bad. Replaced those $320 later problem is still not fixed!!!! I checked on a few other post and some members have been saying they had the axles replaced that that took care of the problem. Ran that by the dealer and the dealer said it was impossible for me to damage them. Finally went to another mechanic put the car on the lift with the car in drive so the wheels spin. There it was both right and left driveshafts have a slight bend in them. Have a mechanic do the same. Put it up on a lift and check for a wiggle in the ds.

I'm not sure if you guys have tried this but when the car is in 5th gear shift to 4th gear and drive at 65+ the noise/vibration isn't there anymore. it usually happens when i'm in 5th gear at 1900rpm when i go above 2000rpm it smooths out...i'm not sure why but it only happens going up slight inclines for me

Must be common with these cars. I just bought my 05 a month ago and noticed the exact same vibration from 70mph. I had the car aligned, problem didnt go away. Definetly a bent rim, I had one of the front ones replaced and problem solved! smooth as heck.

Do you guys think the TSB would apply on a 04 6 speed ??

I got this issue since a couple of days. I'll check the tire pressure and maybe for a DENT, but don't remember denting my mags anywhere...

why is it critical not to use the oem lug nuts with aftermarket wheels? I am running a set of RonJon's and I am currently using the oem lug nuts.

my 04' TL wheel shakes when driving 100 km +

i just bought my 04' TL used, i am the 2nd owner, and just replaced the stock 17' rims with the 18 a-spec chrome rims and love them. However, when i hit 100km + the wheel starts to shake a bit. I brought it to my mechanic and found out that 2 of the rims were bend, got them straightened, and the vibration is not as bad, but it is still there when reaching speeds of 100 km + .
So if anyone else is experiencing this problem, it is likely due to bend rims that need to be straightened.

I can honestly say that i had a little shake in the wheel till i reaplaced all 4 tires, rear shocks and an alignment.... then it went away completly.. My rear shocks failed and my rear tires got screwed up out of that deal. so the dealer repalced my shocks under warranty and i baught new tires and had them Hunter Force and boom problem solved.
