Upper control arm bushing leak
Upper control arm bushing leak
Hi, need some opinions from more experienced enthusiasts.
2006 TL's upper control arm's bushing on the right side is cracked and leaking oil.
Does this pose any dangers if not fixed right away? Dealership is quoting $379.
I have little knowledge of car repairs. But will plan to check local mechanics for better pricing.
Radiator replacement was quoted at $775 too!
Any help is greatly appreciated.

the upper control arm is extremely easy to replace by yourself, you have to purchase the whole arm, since the ball joint isnt seperate from it. i havent looked as to how hard the radiator is to replace, but i have replaced them on other cars and some have been easy, and some have been a PITA.
Hi JBONN,
Thanks! I couldn't find the part number. Is this for the entire upper control arm?
Where do you order from? I found it on www.acuraoemparts.com
What is the part number for the left upper control arm?
Some have recommended to change both sides at the same time.

Before you run off and order hundreds of dollars worth of parts and need an alignment.... tell us exactly what is leaking. There are only two bushings on the FRONT UCAs. They are the two inner bushings that connect the UCA to the chassis. These bushings should be solid rubber, so no chance of them leaking. These two bushings are where the 2 #12 bolts point to.
Now the front UCA also contains an upper ball joint. This ball joint has a boot over it that helps contain grease. The boot is #7 and the part number is 51464-S04-013 and costs all of $2. This boot is very easy to replace as you just need to work the old spiral lock-ring back over it after you snap it on. Be sure wipe & re-grease the ball joint before doing this. Any suspension grease will do. All in all this job should cost you maybe $5-10 in parts to do yourself. Also get yourself a new cotter pin cause it's not safe to reuse the old one (#19 honda part # 94201-20220 50cents). I would probably buy locally (Honda or Acura) cause it will cost more in shipping to order these two parts.
BTW: Be sure the boot is actually cracked. A lot of time it's grease getting squished past the seal where the ball joint stud sticks out.
- Boot $2
- Suspension Grease $5
- Cotter pin $.50
- Towel $1
- Beer $1.50

To separate the upper ball joint from the steering, you will need to rent a tie-rod lifter form OreillyAuto. This tool should be included in the 5-piece front end service set (free tool rental w/ refundable deposit). It may be silver instead of black. If you want to buy the tie-rod-lifter, it will cost about $20 on Amazon.

Jack it up. If the ball joint is out, you should be able to physically move the top of the control arm back and forth with your hands. If it is solid, then the ball joint is OK.
If grease is just coming out, then wipe it off.

...maybe its just me but for $54 I would prefer to replace the entire arm since it comes with a new ball joint and new bushings (may as well do some preventative maintenance and change out bushings while your at it).
p.s. if grease if coming out then you can be sure that dirt is going in...should be replaced.
