Unsolved Mystery

Hey Folks! I have a pronounced whining noise coming from my serpentine belt area. I cant seem to find the right component after replacing my alternator, serpentine belt and tensioner pulley. The suspects are the idler pulley or the power steering pump. I replaced the seals on the power steering pump last year and there aren't any air bubbles in the PS reservoir. Just bought a Idler pulley but I doubt this is the issue. BTW I took off the serpentine belt and ran the engine for 10-15 seconds and the noise was gone. Money is tight so I'm trying to solve the immediate problem first, then go back to preventative maintenance mode. I'll try to attach the video I took as well. 2007 Tl base navi 230k.
Thanks

Sounds like the pump with that whining sound of air infiltration. Normally a pulley will have more of a rattling metallic sound.
Check "O" rings on pump in/out lines.

Make yourself a "Red-Neck" stethoscope (a two to four foot length of garden hose) and use it to isolate the noise.

Pop the lid on your power steering reservoir and see if there are any bubbles coming in. If so, it’s a bad inlet line o-ring... though to be honest, it sounds a bit different. But, it’s easy enough to cross it off the list of potential culprits.

Also... sounds like you have a supercharger in there when you’re stepping on the gas... why’d you want to lose that?!

Thanks TacoBello but it literally changes pitch as the transmission and rpm's change. In all seriousness thanks for your suggestions but I've already tried those things. Since my posting I've replaced the power steering pump and I'm left with the idler pulley. I just got one of those so I'll let you know. Thanks

I had a similar sound when I bought mine, though it definitely wasn't as loud as yours but it got loud when I sped up

Belt looked fine in my case so it's likely the idler pulley. I ended up just buying this and replacing it all. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...=4845798&jsn=3

UPDATE! It was the idler pulley! DTvn I wish you had chimed in before I went through the process of elimination. New PS pump, Belt tensioner, PULLEY and alternator. Now that its so quiet I can hear my lower control arm bushings dying off so I guess that's my next project.
Thanks for all the help guys!

Sorry! at least you have the peace of mind knowing that those parts you swapped out shouldn't fail for a while
