still waiting on my springs to ship from Hong Kong

can't wait to try them out, although i am very worried about having it swing open and hit something. Maybe I'll just set it to open a quarter way up to be safe (halfway might be too risky still)

Thanh...
I don't know why they're playing this shipping game, but Amazon is pissing me off.

I ordered a set yesterday...no prime option or anything. I check when it's expected to arrive...FEBRUARY FKNG 17th...
I click the link provided in this thread now...it takes me to a prime option, same price...says you ordered this January 14th...so exact same thing.

So I ordered it with prime and it'll be here in 2 business days.

that's the point, the day i ordered they gave me a NON prime one that will arrive in a month.
Changed my mind and decided I'll just wait it out.

that's frustrating.

I just took off the deadweight and it goes up faster but not higher. OP must have hulk'd that spring really far to get it up high. Then again I have the Type-S spoiler which is heavier.

Sorry guys I didn't know Amazon would do something like this. I think they didn't have them in stock so no Prime. But then they got it so Prime

I have an after market spoiler. No other mods to the trunk lid. So I didn't have to "extend" the springs that far. Have you tried different "holes"? Maybe some work better than others.

Post some pics and videos !

@Rockstar : BTW, if I were you, I'd re-order with the Prime option. Then give the pair from HK to our fellow TL members in Florida who wants something like this

just letting you guys know, the torsion bars can be safely removed with large channel lock pliers. I've done this a couple times before

My springs finally came in the other day, does anyone who what size of u bolt to get?

The smallest size offered at my Canadian Home Depot is too long

I got both a 1" and a 1.5" u bolt and they both worked but I would suggest the 1.5" u bolt. Also you don't extend the spring at all, there shouldn't be any threads showing on the spring to get the maximum spring tension to open the lid

Thanks dave!
The shortest one Canadian Home depot has is 2-1/4"

Far stretch but do you have a link to the one you bought?
I tried googling OP's barcode in one of the pics he showed but no luck

haha i actually took his pic and found the same exact item number in home depot. unfortunately it was on two different ubolt sizes so i got both but both worked haha.

my mistake it's actually 3/4" and 1/2" u bolts i bought. both worked but 3/4" is better. i took a pic of the u-bolts when installing and here is the bar code and the link to the exact one that works best:

bar code: 8748006816

I just installed this but i'm not sure if the springs are already getting stretched out, as the up rate isn't as fast or strong as the first day. anyone else having this issue?

To the people who installed this after OP: did you put the u hook towards the front?

I did the u hook towards the front, and it went all the way up before I put the top liner back.

After putting the top liner back, it only pops up half way and stops, due to friction with the liner.

Anyone else experience the same?

here's some videos! i didn't get full opening from the springs because i have lots of sound dampening on my trunk lid. the springs are the shortest length possible and there's one on each side (no threads showing)

before, you couldn't even tell the trunk was open haha:

after, much better! thanks OP!:

i put mine towards the front and it only opens halfway but i attribute that to the extra weight of my sound dampening on my entire trunk lid. did you make the length of the spring as short as possible with the threads?

I'll have to try adjusting the spring all the way.
Right now there's about 1.5cm of thread left on both sides.

I think my problem is with the liner, I hear horrible rubbing noise when the trunk opens and closes.

Just to clarify, you did the opposite direction for the u hook as the OP right?

Thanks!

i did my ubolt opposite of the OP. i put it how he suggested to do it.

my spring is hooked at the same spot as the OP. i can hear the springs being stretched but nothing sounds bad like what you're describing. try making the springs the shortest length possible first (i used pliers to get a good grip on the spring to hook it into the lip)

Just went and maxed out the springs, and it opens up 3/4 instead of 1/2 way up.
I have the OEM style lip spoiler, that's about all that's different. Dead weight is removed, no sound deadening or anything.
A bit disappointed, but oh well. I also noticed the hole in the trunk is indented because of the spring, which explains why the spring is not as strong as day 1 as someone mentioned. Tension decreases as the sheet metal indents closer.

This is one of the mods that it's best if the trunk lifts all the way up, or 1/4 way up. Nothing inbetween. Looks weird, if you get what I'm coming from.
My mentality is that if it's gonna go 3/4 up, it's so close to being fully opened but it's not. People will wonder who the hell designed the trunk to almost open fully

I'll be dialing the springs back so that it opens up 1/4 of the way up, or like your height sockr.

sockr, your height is perfect. I notice it bounces up 1/2 way up but then settles down to quite a bit, a little more than 1/4 way up. Part way between the 1/2 and 1/4 way up mark.

I must admit, this mod is really cool. It really does prevent people from dropping your trunk to close it, and allows your trunk to open up higher.

Hey sockr, thx for redirecting me to this thread i just ordered the springs on amazon but im a little confuse, you said the 3/4 is better but the part number and link for the correct part is

1/4 in. x 1-1/8 in. x 2-1/16 so which one should i buy ? the 3/4 or the one on the link? thx!

you're welcome! Buy the one I linked. It's the same thing as 3/4". The 3/4" just refers to the pipe size it's meant to hold...they are one and the same

Hi All,

First of all, happy holidays. Hope all is enjoying the best time of the year

I think any size of the U-bolts will do ...

The motive behind this mod was to prevent slamming of the trunk door. I hated that dearly.

I've also noticed that the tension gets weaker over time but that's the normal wear of springs (especially on such cheap mod).

I just hated the slamming !!

As an added bonus, the trunk "spring" up which also helped me with loading groceries.

It's not the ultimate mod but hey .. it's a pretty cheap DIY

Anyhow, thanks for the feedback !

By the way, I also found a way to install AEM cold air intake without removing a single bolt from the front bumper with a-spec ... just need to remove half of the the driver side wheel liner with some jacks and right angles ... it did take longer to install but that what i've been aiming to keep the car intact from factory as much as possible ... unfortunately i did not take any photos for this intake installation ... will post some updated pics ... not very good with the acurazine stuff ...

Happy to see that there are 3G TL fans here ... it's a great car ... I enjoy driving it ... 1st owner and will be the last owner of it

Just a quick update, i had the springs for a couple months and i decided to do the fix since i had a day off, went to home depot, renot depot, canadian tire and another hardware store and none of them the had the correct u bolt size

1/4 in. x 1-1/8 in. x 2-1/16 in

i needed to do the job, only way to get it would be to drive from montreal/canada to the US and buy them in home depot... i couldnt find them online as well so im not sure what to do and home depot wont order them since they dont carry this product. Are there any other alternative in term of ubolt size or an online retailler that would ship to canada ?

I used to live in Montreal too. I'd say just get something similar in size that you think will do the job. There's no definite size. I just happen to find this size at home depot. It can be a bit bigger too.

On my 2006 TL, the trunk opened about 4 inches, probably due to old torsion bars. Then, one of them broke.
I installed the bars that go with the A-Spec trunk wing. I just used a big pair of channel locks to install them.
Now, the trunk opens all of the way, like the trunk lid of the Chevy Cruze does in that video.

Did this in 2023, except I didn't stretch the springs to get the trunk lid to open all the way full, it opens about halfway which is fine by me. Also, no affil but I purchased a set of trunk lid springs off of Amazon with a u-bracket in the kit already, so I didn't have to spend extra buying those

What do you actually have to take apart in the trunk in order to get this installed?

You have to remove some of the trunk lining, but a phillips and flathead will do it. I couldn't get my trunk to open more than halfway, but I wasn't necessarily hoping it would open the full amount so it works for me just fine opening halfway.
